I honestly don't know what the answer is to the Leafs issues, but I think the anti-Marner crowd is going to rue the day if they trade him. He's one of the most talented home-grown Leafs since....well, maybe Sittler, Wendel Clark, Russ Courtnall or Vincent Damphouse? I mean, what can you get in return for a stud like him? I know, his playoffs aren't great....but he's the straw that stirs the drink. And, I think he probably was still injured from the high ankle sprain....
On that note, I'd love to know what the fuck hit Nylander in the first three games, and the illness/injury that hit Matthews in games 4-6....
The Leafs are not a total bust. Teams that have beaten them have made the Finals so they've lost to very good teams and most in 7 games. They've made the playoffs 8 consecutive years. Matthews and company have never missed the playoffs.
What's the common denominator. The opposition has always had the superior goaltending. There's Rask, Vasilevsky, Price, Bobrovsky, and Swayman. Meanwhile Leafs are putting out there Reimer, Andersen, Campbell, and Samsonov. Last 10 years Leafs have also had Bernier, Sparks, Enroth, Bibeau, McElhinney, Pickard, Hutchinson, Kaskisuo, Rittich, Mrazek, Kallgren, Murray, Jones. That is a huge list of nonsense goalies.
Leafs now have Woll. He looks like a potential real deal but he could be injury prone. He's played a total of 7 playoff games.
In those 7 games though he has a 1.78 GGA and .933 SV%
Leafs will probably resign Marner. Keep him as part of the core 3 forwards. Let Tavares contract expire and use the money to get 2 D the calibre of Tanev and Pesce. Use Woll as their starter. So next year they'll be fielding a lot of low priced help. They should make the playoffs still. They have cheap labour in Benoit, Lili, Timmons, Knies, McMann, Holmberg. They have McCabe for one more year and Rielly, Kampf, Jarnkrok longer term. Oh, and Reaves for 2 more years.
