His first goal. Look who was on the ice with him. Brooks Laich taking the faceoff. Ben Smith on the other wing. Carrick and Marincin on D. Leafs have come a long way. Now he's playing with Tavares and Bert and haters are waiting for him to end his point streak so they can call him inconsistent and streaky. Matthews 6 goals in first 2 games yet no one calls him streaky. Actually there is one person who wants him traded for a bag of pucks each game he doesn't score.

Are you trying to compare Nylander's accomplishments to Matthews'?

You missed the point.
Nylander gets tagged with all these mysterious hate.
Trying to figure out why Nylander is tagged with being inconsistent.
Matthews doesn't score every game. Doesn't mean he's inconsistent.
It's not a shot at Matthews. He's playing great but he doesn't score every game.
That's my point.

Wasn't even a shot at Marner either with his zero goals in the playoffs.
Another one is Nylander is only performing because of contract year.
Well check out his playoff performances for at least the last 3 years.

Another is he gets knocked down easily. This was the most ludicrous one.
Or that he doesn't go to the front of the net.

Nobody gets on Nylander for not scoring every game, I have never heard that.
He gets tagged for playing inconsistently.
It's not just in here, it's out there, broadcasters constantly alluding to it.
How many times has he been benched? Benched!

He gets tagged because he's the most gifted player on the team and this stuff has trailed him his whole career.
Last year was the first year he cracked the point a game barrier.
If your not going to give me physical play, or great hustle on the check, or backchecking, you better put up more offense than that.
If he got knocked for inconsistent production it's only because he wasn't giving much else.
Having said that, he's having an amazing start, he looks like a monster out there.
I hope he keeps it up so I can rekindle my man crush for him.

It's not the goals. My point is one game or a few games is a small sample.
A player can go without a point or a goal for a few games that matter so what.
Ok so from this comment
"I hope he keeps it up so I can rekindle my man crush for him."
you are one of the haters.
For me I like the way he plays. Same way I liked the way Kessel played and they perform when it matters most and when the pressure is on. I'm not talking about the regular season as you know Leafs are considered a huge failure even though their regular season results are excellent. It's about the playoffs and International play.

I remember Matthews his first playoffs vs Washington. He was flying out there. Looked dangerous every shift. That's what Nylander looks like in the playoffs. He was flying out there.

That wasn't true?
He's gotten better lately, but you can't argue that wasn't the case for the longest time.

You're so sensitive about this guy, let him earn respect with his game, not just his skill set.
If he stays this way, everything will be hunkie dory.

One of the haters? Sounds cultish.
Is that all you can glean from my comment?

Nylander is in his peak of his career at 27 yo maybe until 29 or 30, after that he will start declining slowly

Stays this way?
He's been playing great for a few years already.

Matthews went from 60 goals to 40 goals was that hunkie dory?
Before you go off thinking I"m comparing Matthews and Nylander again my point is haters will find things to hate about Nylander regardless of what he does.
Is not getting a point next game enough to qualify for retracting the hunkie dory status?

... and speaking of your point on the media every media now is raving about Nylander so what gives? The haters are still grasping at air, what was, and what ifs.

Nylander is a great value at 7 million a season. Sure was a good signing at the time.

I know when he signed the extension there was some doubters.
Yes, management was heavily criticized for the signing amount at the time. However, he was nowhere near this good at that time.

but it wasn't a 1 year contract he signed. It had term. The haters couldn't grasp the concept of term.
Expectation was for salary cap to go up as well but covid came.
Otherwise it would have been an even better contract.

I'm starting to get a feeling we will see Nylander stay and Marner be dealt.

It seems to me that anyone who criticizes Willy is a “hater” . I’m sure I’m another one of those in your eyes.

”Mysterious hate” ? It’s mysterious to you only because you just turn a blind eye to his shot comings. In your mind you’re just looping all the high lite plays he makes but his half ass efforts, missing checks and selfish plays “mysteriously disappear” from your memory.

Sure Matthews and Marner have had bad games, but unlike Nylander, at least their effort’s are there the majority of time. I’ve always said Nylander has just as much if not more pure offensive talent but it’s the lack of effort, more so in years prior to this season, is holding him back from becoming a great player. So far this season he’s proving how great he can be with consistent great efforts.

I’ve heard your argument that it was because of his development and not his contract year that he’s playing great. Such a mysterious coincidence that he waited till his contract year to blossom but perhaps we can revisit this debate a few years after he gets his next big contract.

I don’t hate Willy the person, in fact I think he’s a good guy from what I can gather from the print and tv media. The fact that he takes the subway to work hints that he is maybe a down to earth kind of guy. I praise him when I see good effort and don’t think that I have a hate on Swedes. In fact Salming is my all time favourite Leaf. If you’re old enough to have watched him play you’d know what “effort, heart and grit” mean.
