I don't disagree with your assessment of not turning Pearson into a 1 inning specialty reliever.

As an asdie, Ward could certainly go multiple innings like most pitchers from the 80's and early 90's . Relievers (and starters for that matter) were not babied like today team could run through the season with 10 man pitching staff and extra innings with no real issues.

Most pitchers today are close to 1:1 ratio.

The amount of innings Ward pitched between 88 and 92 is generally unheard of today for a reliever, and he was nothing special in that regard.

Games / Innings
1988 - 64 Games, 111 Innings
1989 - 66 Games, 114 Innings
1990 - 73 / 127
1991 - 81/107
1992 - 79 / 101

The ratio got less and less by 1991 and 1992 - that is the start of the period where managers started to slow down the innings for relievers.
Duane Ward and Roger Clemens are my two favourite pitchers of all time. I wish they tracked spin rate back then, because Ward threw a very heavy ball.

Did you get your pizza yet?
Just ordered Jets Pizza on Uber and came home with it. Jets Pizza and their 500 locations across the US lol. What’s a real Detroit treat these days is Moms Spaghetti the spaghetti shop that Eminem owns. It’s on the next block over from the Fox Theatre, across the street from Comerica. Those spaghetti sandwiches are amazing.

Are the Jays going to hit pootzy while Springer is on paternity leave?

Diane Ward was unhitable in his prime, unfortunately it was the heavy curveball he threw that blew out his shoulder.

I thought Manoah looked pretty good. He looked strong, and a touch more fit and energetic. I was at Comerica for Fridays game. I was able to watch the pitch clock and his rhythm at the same time. He was working fast and finding a rhythm with that. It was nice to see.

Mind you it’s the Tigers. But still, hopefully this is the sign of things to come..

I thought he was working kind of slow starting around the 4th/5th inning. And he was fighting his stuff at times. But overall it was nice to see a strong outing with much better control over his pitch arsenal. Hope the progression continues because without him firing we stand no chance in the post season.

No support for Guassman again

i do not understand

Not even one hit

very odd how they cannot capitalize on there ace

he is 7 and 5 but should easily be in double digits

first no hitter with more than one pitcher in tigers history
Getting no hit by one of the worst pitching staffs in MLB is pitiful.

According to AM590 radio, the current AL East win/loss record of all 5 teams is the best ever in all of MLB history.

And the Jays are stuck in this division 😟

Moreno is a 23 year old rookie what kind of numbers did you expect? His BA has slipped recently but he still sports a respectable .312 OBP and has thrown out 47% of base stealers. He'll be a perennial gold glover.
Krik is 24 has a .317 OBP and has only thrown out 21% of runners. He has the ability to throw out 30%+ but his problem is weight. And where did his power go - only 3 dingers?
Jansen is 28 has an awful .282 OBP and has thrown out a paltry 12% of base stealers. He's clearly the worst defensive option of the 3. But he clearly has the most power.

As it stands right now, Atkins lost this deal pretty bad. No doubt Varsho is good defensively, but he has a .277 OBP. That's pitiful.

Anyone watch the MLB draft last night. Jays selected Arjun Nimmala, a prep shortstop from Florida. There seems to be tremendous upside with this kid, who's only 17. But I think it was the wrong pick. We have a team now. The better fit would have been Hurston Waldrep, a pitcher out of the University of Florida. Within a year or two he'll be MLB ready just needs to work on his control. His upside is SP3.

AA did a below average / bad job with the farm system. It was not good when he left and while he developed a few pitchers (Stroman / Sanchez) there was no position player of good caliber that was developed and reached the majors in his entire 8 year run, -- the best was Kevin Pillar.

AA's success was largely built off 3 brilliant moves:
1) Bautista cheap off the scrap heap
2) Encarnacion on the cheap (not sure if it was waivers or a jobber trade)
3) The Donaldson trade

But without developing talent the Jays got old quickly by 2016.

Here is the sad thing:
1) Shapiro / Atkins did a very good job developing talent in Cleveland. Right now with the Jays, the system stinks. They are not doing a good job in system development.
2) AA has done a great job developing, accumulating and managing talent in Atlanta. But he did below average in developing talent in Toronto.
Given that these guys appear to do better developing other organizations than their time with the Jays, how do you explain that?

Is it ownership, or just luck?

I should have specified 2023. His throwing is good, but his offense isnt.
This season so far:

231 at bats. 267 Batting average. 2 homeruns, 26 ribbies. 312 OBP. 655 OPS.
I prefer Jansen over him. Especially when it comes to clutch hitting

Have you also seen his clutch hitting??
I lost count how many key hits he had that won, tied or got Jays back into games.

I agree with you on Kirk though. Not sure whats going on with him
