I thought Manoah looked pretty good. He looked strong, and a touch more fit and energetic. I was at Comerica for Fridays game. I was able to watch the pitch clock and his rhythm at the same time. He was working fast and finding a rhythm with that. It was nice to see.

Mind you it’s the Tigers. But still, hopefully this is the sign of things to come..

Hopefully Gausman will get the run support today as Manoah did last night, if there is a game, rain forecasted all day.

It was a planned start against the Tigers for him, a confidence building game.
After giving up 11 runs in 2 2/3 innings to rookies only 2 games ago, there were no guarantees of building confidence against any MLB team.

I thought it was a risky move this early, but as I say, we are all outsiders and we are not privy to what goes on aside from what we see and hear on TV as opposed to management.

If he'd crapped out again, his confidence could have been absolutely crushed.

This offense is unreal, score 12 runs yesterday, get no hit today, Gausman gets “Dave Stieb’d” again.

Why?

1)They have Swanson for that.
2)He can pitch multiple innings (unlike Ward)
3)The last I heard is that the long term plan is to still make him a starter.
I don't disagree with your assessment of not turning Pearson into a 1 inning specialty reliever.

As an asdie, Ward could certainly go multiple innings like most pitchers from the 80's and early 90's . Relievers (and starters for that matter) were not babied like today team could run through the season with 10 man pitching staff and extra innings with no real issues.

Most pitchers today are close to 1:1 ratio.

The amount of innings Ward pitched between 88 and 92 is generally unheard of today for a reliever, and he was nothing special in that regard.

Games / Innings
1988 - 64 Games, 111 Innings
1989 - 66 Games, 114 Innings
1990 - 73 / 127
1991 - 81/107
1992 - 79 / 101

The ratio got less and less by 1991 and 1992 - that is the start of the period where managers started to slow down the innings for relievers.

Exactly

tigers are weak hitters and right hand batters heavy

they also have the ball park we should have built at a fraction of the cost of the freakin skydome

I guess memory fades with time. I recalled him as the 8th inning set-up guy, but clearly he was not simply a 1 inning guy. Maybe his role got more specialized closer to the time when Henke was getting near the end of his time.

Duane Ward and Roger Clemens are my two favourite pitchers of all time. I wish they tracked spin rate back then, because Ward threw a very heavy ball.

Did you get your pizza yet?
Just ordered Jets Pizza on Uber and came home with it. Jets Pizza and their 500 locations across the US lol. What’s a real Detroit treat these days is Moms Spaghetti the spaghetti shop that Eminem owns. It’s on the next block over from the Fox Theatre, across the street from Comerica. Those spaghetti sandwiches are amazing.

Are the Jays going to hit pootzy while Springer is on paternity leave?

Diane Ward was unhitable in his prime, unfortunately it was the heavy curveball he threw that blew out his shoulder.

I thought he was working kind of slow starting around the 4th/5th inning. And he was fighting his stuff at times. But overall it was nice to see a strong outing with much better control over his pitch arsenal. Hope the progression continues because without him firing we stand no chance in the post season.

No support for Guassman again

i do not understand

Not even one hit

very odd how they cannot capitalize on there ace

he is 7 and 5 but should easily be in double digits

first no hitter with more than one pitcher in tigers history
Getting no hit by one of the worst pitching staffs in MLB is pitiful.
