Because they are the only true democracy in the area, they contribute to society and protect our (again, mainly the U.S.) interests there. They are Americans' biggest ally and provide valuable intelligence. The U.S. needs them almost as much as Israel needs the US.

Against the west. Most terrorism originates from or is funded by Iran. Israel monitors Iran and it's communications and has inflicted damage on their atomic program. Iran knows that Israel is a formidable foe.
