So I need to get my dads house painted. I will gladly pay for it but he won’t let that happen. Not at full price. Is there somewhere that does painting for seniors or for a senior discount. (I can’t believe I even wrote that - yuk)

Or just a good place, professional that I can say is giving him a seniors discount. I’ll happily pay the full cost and we can just lie to my dad.

Before I get the questions, I love him but he is old and set in his ways. Physical issues prevent him from doing it and that is hard on his esteem. He is feeling old age and not liking it. I don’t want to wind him up emotionally over painting the house.

3 bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, living 8 dinning rooms, 2 staircases and one entry way. Wall paper removal on stairs and slightly patch work on walls, nothing major. Big job I know so even the idea of asking for a place that works with a senior budget is making me feel awful. He may have a senior “budget” but I don’t.

Anyway thanks in advance.

My 22yo kid paints houses, has 2 years experience at it and is currently between jobs.

He and his ad hoc crew have experience doing whole houses, typically as a new move in or as an estate situation.

What part of the City, as that will be the biggest issue.

Oh. That would help. He is Scarborough and dad is simple. All white walls - we have the paint.

Sorry. wrong side of town for us now.

Today is memorial service for sister in law, who lived in central Scarborogh near the hospital.
Her old place would have otherwise been the location my kid would have hubbed out of working that far east.
But we cleared it out to end the rental lease three months ago.
We are s/w Mississauga.

It will still be a pretty big job, with the house being occupied and furnished.

So gather furnishings to room center, tarp them, fit floor drops around the furniture pile.
Remove outlet covers and window coverings if needed.
Fill holes and cracks, sand/scratch, then first coat half a day later.
If over ex white a first coat may suffice, but it depends on quality of the paint.

If semi gloss on trim and doors is part of the task, then that stretches the process a bit longer as there are separate masking steps.

There is more to professional painting that you think, unless you have done it yourself for a bit.
If you find someone, on average figure getting one room done in a day, with still leaving your dad somewhere to live from.

All the best in your hunting.

There was a college student painting company but I think they have all graduated now and are no longer painting houses. If I see their sign, I'll let you know. Staving students will do jobs that no self-respected Canadians will touch.

Avoid low cost, inexperienced people for a job like this. They will probably mess it up. If there is an accident during the work and they don't carry WSIB coverage, then homeowner insurance is on the hook.

Best bet is to visit local professional paint supply places and ask around for who they recommend for this kind of work. Places like Sherwin Williams, Benjiman Moore and such - not Home Depots and the like.

Now that being said, you will come off as a potential bad customer as having your own paint already is a red flag. Professional painters select paints for best effect based on their experience. Often (I assume) lower cost paint takes more time to apply due to poor coverage or other characteristics. No good painter will want use someone else's paint.

Anyway, good luck with this - I'm sure you will be able to find the right person to get this work done to your satisfaction

Paint is supplied by his property manager, there is nothing we can do about it. Trust me I know this is a difficult task.

We are not looking for low cost, just heard there are some places that work for seniors With a discount for their low income. I did find a place but they don’t work Scarborough, just Toronto, which I don’t understand the difference but there was a boundary issue. There are places that do maintenance work and handy man jobs for seniors, but searching just comes up with everything else but what I am looking for.

Honestly, I am ready to hire a company, tell them to lie to him about a lower cost and just pay the difference without him knowing. LOL

What a strange idea you have. There a many self-respecting Canadians, both old-stock and recent who professionaly paint. You can find these people working in commerical and residential fields.

What one will have difficulty finding is someone who does good work at prices too low for a sustianable business model. These are the people in the trades with no self-respect.

As you probably know when spending money one has to choose two of: good, fast or cheap. Making peace with this and choosing makes life easier than hunting for unicorns, or blaming...

I was actually thinking of my experience growing up in rural Quebec. The farmers there had to "import" foreign labour to do farm work because locals couldn't and/or wouldn't do it. Maybe it is vastly different in the house painting field.

You are right. Born and bred Canadians will not touch manual labour at the going rate, being it farm labour, painting, dry wall etc.

At the same time they are complaining about migrants taking work away from them.

Not sure what you mean. I know a lot of Canadian born people in the trades, electrical/plumbing/drywall etc. If you work a trade you make at least 100k per year. Problem is that most of the kids I grew up with all wanted to be doctors/lawyers/stockbroker/office job, as I did. Not until you get older that you realize that a lot of those office jobs pay a lot less than you can make in the trades.

Farm work on the other hand is generally backbreaking labour that is paid piecework and I don't know a lot of people who want to kill themselves in the sun for $100 a day. (My rates are a little dated. I haven't worked picking on a farm in over 20 years.)

The rates for painting was $500 per room all in, for an average sized house, maybe 5-8 years ago. Not sure if it has gone up since then.

They have a Scarborough location as well. If you contact that location they will give you a quote for the job. It may not be done right away due to the bookings, but they should give you a timeline as well as the costs etc:

You are referring to regulated trades, that require a certification, like Electrician, plumber etc.

Painter and drywaller are not regulated.

You mentioned a property manager, why aren't they doing the painting or hiring someone themselves?
