hey Scenic? who do you wish the Sabres play? I'd think their game matches up best against the Islanders, but Ruff matches up very well against Carbonneau.??? your opinion?
21pro, you are correct. From the Sabres' standpoint, Islanders will be the easiest opponent. The Sabres always have a hard time with their own divisional foes. But they will find a way to win once playoffs begin. Their toughest opponent is in the Western Conference, not Montreal or Toronto. So we shall see. :)

Considering that this is the Go Leafs Go! thread:

I have two opposing views to consider and perhaps debate:

Do you really hope the leafs make the playoffs?

Consider March 31, 1990:
Following a game where the Isles just defeated the Flyers in the final game of the season and were in competition for 8th spot with Pittsburgh, the NYI's were, of course cheering for a Pittsburgh loss to Buffalo at the same game time. However, the PIT/BUF game was in OT and while the Islanders were awaiting in their dressing room, they played close attention to the 'other' game. It was Uwe Krupp that scored the goal in which eliminated the Penguins from Post Season play and thus, securing the Isles' in the 8th and final playoff spot.

The story relates to the same situation today, where the Isles, Leafs and CDN's currently find themselves in... the next 24 hours are incredibly suspenseful for all involved, teams and fans alike...

and for the Islanders it was a costly victory...

BTW- the Islanders were also nearly swept out of the 1st round in 5 games anyways...

but, it was even long term costly because making the playoffs bumped the Islanders draft order from 5th spot to 6th in that summers entry draft. Pittsburgh ended up drafting Jaromir Jagr with that 5th overall choice.

It led to 2 stanley cup victories immediately following that pick. the Islanders missed both of those playoffs! in fact, That next year, the Islanders finished well out of the playoffs after winning only 25 games.

also, the Islanders' top choice, Scott Scissons, Scissons made his NHL debut with the Islanders, appearing in one game at the end of the 1990-91 season. He then spent the 1991-92 season playing with the Canadian National Hockey Team. However, he was not chosen to represent Canada at the 1992 Winter Olympics.

Scissons spent the 1992-93 season playing with the Islanders' AHL affiliate, the Capital District Islanders. He did, however, appear in one game with New York during the 1993 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He appeared in one more game with New York during the 1993-94 season, and spent the remainder of

all in all, In his short NHL career, Scissons appeared in two regular-season and one playoff game, going scoreless.

I don't think we need to compare his career to that of Jaromir Jagr's...

Quite a sacrifice to try and make 8th spot, isn't it...

The Isles have just defeated the Flyers 4-2 & they are now tied with the Habs. I think the Devils will start Clemenson tomorrow against the Iles.

Those numbers sound strange to me unless only 21 teams were in the league. 16 teams make the playoffs. If the Isles were the lowest points total in, they'd have 6th pick if only 5 teams didn't make it.

Back to the question. Aside from the revenues generated by 2 more home games (at wildly inflated prices) the Leafs franchise will be better served by missing. At this point I'd like to see Montreal out as well and let the Isles in. I think they deserve it the most. Ted Nolan has done wonders with them.

I would have pulled Raycroft after the second goal.... but Aubin isn't a superb goalie either. I'm awaiting the start of the powerplay in the third.

Here's what the Leafs need to do.

Figure 2 home playoff games is worth 10-15 million dollars for the Leafs. Pay Lamoriello 2 million to play Brodeur tomorrow and promise Brodeur 1 million if he wins the game.

Makes good business sense.

HABS are DEAD!!!

If the Islanders lose tomorrow, the Leafs will have to make a decision about giving Aubin at least some of the netminding duties. It's obvious Raycroft can't take the pressure.
Too bad Maurice has a grudge against Aubin (going back to last year with the Marlies), and keeps publicly saying Raycroft is the goalie.

Raycroft might be able to play relatively well for a game or two at most. Last year, Aubin demonstrated that he has the ability to put together a winning streak. I'd start Aubin if we make the playoffs.
