Considering that this is the Go Leafs Go! thread:
I have two opposing views to consider and perhaps debate:
Do you really hope the leafs make the playoffs?
Consider March 31, 1990:
Following a game where the Isles just defeated the Flyers in the final game of the season and were in competition for 8th spot with Pittsburgh, the NYI's were, of course cheering for a Pittsburgh loss to Buffalo at the same game time. However, the PIT/BUF game was in OT and while the Islanders were awaiting in their dressing room, they played close attention to the 'other' game. It was Uwe Krupp that scored the goal in which eliminated the Penguins from Post Season play and thus, securing the Isles' in the 8th and final playoff spot.
The story relates to the same situation today, where the Isles, Leafs and CDN's currently find themselves in... the next 24 hours are incredibly suspenseful for all involved, teams and fans alike...
and for the Islanders it was a costly victory...
BTW- the Islanders were also nearly swept out of the 1st round in 5 games anyways...
but, it was even long term costly because making the playoffs bumped the Islanders draft order from 5th spot to 6th in that summers entry draft. Pittsburgh ended up drafting Jaromir Jagr with that 5th overall choice.
It led to 2 stanley cup victories immediately following that pick. the Islanders missed both of those playoffs! in fact, That next year, the Islanders finished well out of the playoffs after winning only 25 games.
also, the Islanders' top choice, Scott Scissons, Scissons made his NHL debut with the Islanders, appearing in one game at the end of the 1990-91 season. He then spent the 1991-92 season playing with the Canadian National Hockey Team. However, he was not chosen to represent Canada at the 1992 Winter Olympics.
Scissons spent the 1992-93 season playing with the Islanders' AHL affiliate, the Capital District Islanders. He did, however, appear in one game with New York during the 1993 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He appeared in one more game with New York during the 1993-94 season, and spent the remainder of
all in all, In his short NHL career, Scissons appeared in two regular-season and one playoff game, going scoreless.
I don't think we need to compare his career to that of Jaromir Jagr's...
Quite a sacrifice to try and make 8th spot, isn't it...
