probably true, kirmit... had they won....

but i think what a-rod and myself are thinking is that the leafs never did have the team to do it this season. ie, they never had a team that could beat montreal in march 2 games straight... and thus, they don't have a team that should be in the playoffs...

Actually, Montreal was 8th at that time and Toronto was 9th and close. Toronto didn't need to win both games. One game would have gaved them a chance. Remember, those are 4 point games. If you remove 2 points from Monreal and add them to the Leafs, then Toronto would still be within striking distance. Unfortunately for the Leafs, they lost both and, as i said, that was the back breaker.

but, that doesn't negate what i said... that they just didn't have the team to win either game or get into the playoffs.

Those 2 games just put the last nail in the coffin......

But I believe that their season was defined with the two or three games earlier on in the season. By the time they got to Montreal they were holding on to a thin thread.

Game against Phoenix..

what game do you think sealed their fate, so to speak?

...it was about early January...leafs were 9 games over 500 at the time..Leafs had a 3-0 lead after one period at the ACC..Coyotes came back to win 4-3. After that loss, the Leafs went on that extended losing streak...eight in a row I think..and never got back on track. That's what put them where they are now, only mathematically alive in the playoff hunt. Had they not been so mentally weak, and recovered from that loss and pulled off a few more victories in January and February,we'd see them ahead of Montreal and Tampa in the standings..but that's all "woulda shoulda coulda" stuff...at least Tampa lost Sunday to keep things a little interesting...

exactly.

when you look at the schedule that a team like San Jose has, 6 games between Sunday night and next Monday night... and yet, are able to climb the standings from 9th and now 7th... started at 12th back in November..., (they too, were only mathematically alive in the playoff hunt) but, you see how the numerical possibility can be executed if the team has the right strong mental attitude or on the other hand how they will faulter if they fail to execute and get the needed wins...

9 Games Over .500?

N2G[/QUOTE]

I doubt very much if the Leafs were ever 9 games over .500 this season. I remember JFJ saying, at some point when the media wanted Quinn fired, that he's X games over .500 . The team was actually only X points over .500 . 9 games = 18 points. If they had ever been 18 points over .500, they'd be a cinch to make the playoffs.

Jan. 2nd they became 6 games over .500 (coulda been a typo on n2g's part) and after that they went on an eight game losing slide where they ended up 2 games under .500 and remained at .500 or worse until the last 10 games in which they won 6 of...

...my error..I remembered it to be 9..wishful thinking...lol...but you are correct..it was 6..after the fateful loss to Phoenix, they were 23-17-3...not that bad... if they would have been able to keep that pace, they would have been firmly in a playoff spot right now....and Montreal won again tonight...so really the only faint hope left is a total collapse by the Stanley Cup Champs, the Tampa Bay Lightning(makes me wanna hurl to write that)...and every point left for the Leafs to be taken by them....naw... its over

These are all very winnable games for the Leafs. :) The Senators are in a free fall lately and the Sabres are still inconsistent. The problem is when playoff spot is on the line, do not expect New Jersey, Montreal, and Tampa Bay to let loose their grip. The Leafs only have themselves to blame for not controlling their own destiny earlier in the season.

and the other 3 teams are perhaps the 3 overall that the leafs have had the best record against this season.

tampa plays thrashers, hurricanes, hurricanes and capitals... a bit more difficult teams overall, but all tampa needs is one win and one overtime loss to secure 8th spot from the leafs.

Next year

Will be huge for the Leafs. Most likely Zdeno Chara and Wade Redden will be patrolling the blue line and Patrick Elias potting 40+ upfront. I would not be suprised if they landed Luongo who desperately wants to sign with Toronto, seeing they are the most storied and respected franchise in hockey. Paul Maurice would be great behind the bench, but they should be able to attract someone like Dave Tippet out of Dallas or Jacques Martin out of Florida. There won't be many holes in the lineup next year at all. Probably the team to beat in the East IMHO.

Come to think of it, they have the chance to land every good free agent this off season, becauuse they all want to play in Toronto, every last one of them.

well no.

No team can sign three marquee free agents Redden, Chara, and Elias in one off-season. The Senators will keep one of those guys, cannot see Elias leaving, and Luongo isn't a free agent this off season. The cap is going up next season, but not by $30 million.

missed the point.

I think the Leafs can sign the aforementioned because they want to play in Toronto. If JFJ picked up the phone and said "Wade and Zdeno, you can play in the beautiful, safe, and championship laden City of Toronto", they would say "You can have both of us as a package for 5.5M a year" (similar to the Selanne Kariya thing).

I mean just the prospect of them pulling the storied TML jersey on would be enough to give them goose bumps. I would say the same holds true for Elias. For him, being able to wake up in the morning, knowing that Redden, Chara, Kaberle, and McCabe are backing him, he can do his thing without worry.

Even if Luongo isn't a free agent, every free agent goalie (and every other position player for that matter) will be waiting by the phone for JFJ to make any offer and sign on the dotted line. I don't think Torontonians realize how much people want to live and play in Toronto (I think the most beautiful city in North America). JFJ is in an admirable position. I think the organization and it's fans should be blushing at these prospects. Consider yourselves lucky.

those three would actually all fit under Florida's current payroll. (they have the league's #1 available cap room presently and also the lowest payroll)

considering florida is only 1 spot behind toronto, that goes to show how much better performance for dollar spent Keenan gets over JFjr...

imagine Luongo backstopping behind Chara and Redden, Bowmeister and Van Ryn, Ric Jackman and Branislav Mezei, Montador and Sean Hill... now that's defense!

and then up front would entail Jokkinen, Elias, and Gelinas... 2nd line Roberts, Niewendyk and Horton... 3rd Stumpel, Kolnick, and Rastislav Olesz... and 4th line including big Gratton between John Sim, and Serge Payer.

hypothetical and absurd, yes... and it would never happen as the reason being, what Eastern conference GM would allow Florida to build such a team to play against...

and you thought they'd all wanna come to Toronto?
