here, there and everywhere!
toby's

Back when I used to live in Toronto I used to love a place called Toby's. They had several locations (one in the Eaton Centre, another on Yonge near Bloor) but last time I was in town I couldn't find it so I don't know if they are still around or not. They had a menu full of all sorts of "specialty" burgers and every one of them was great (I pretty much tried them all at one time or another)

Toby's is out of biz. Tried the upscale pricey health conscious food trend and failed.

Many years ago, in burger heaven and I'm not even a burger addict. The Green iguana, a local legend for Tex-Mex downtown Santa Barbara. Baja burger - with portobello mushroom, red pepper mayo, avocado and Guacamole, sure not traditional N.A. helpings but my taste bud was in esctasy. Never again have I tasted guacamole with a kick to it.

Now back to T.O. -
Licks depending on location and cook.
Johnny's used to be my fav for late night bite. Hit and miss now.
Never order burger from Fred's not here as enticed by his spicy dishes.
I think there may be a Fire pit in Scarb but didn't seem to be busy.

There's a Toby's Good Eats at Empress Walk, if that's the same Toby's you're referring to. I think the Yonge/Bloor location is still there as well.

can't say I've been to East end spots but...

out in the west end best I've had is 10 oz minced serloin at a place called "The Purple Onion" on Keele just south of St. Clair, only $4.50 (for those less greedy than myself a 6 oz is 3.50 LOL). Add fries for another buck and you have one tasty (but not overly healthy  ) feast!

Best commercial burger is still Harvey's, ....I got the recipe for the $40 hamburger at Bymarks and I make it myself, mine is second best.
Well then do share. What is the recipe?
TIA

Yes, I saw it yesterday. Its still there at Bloor and Yonge. Last time I went there, about 6 months ago, the burger was overcooked and dried out. But the variety of toppings there is impressive. I'd say its gone downhill. But maybe they just had an off day. YMMV?

Start by paying too much for sirloin and grind it up (8 ounces per burger)

Next buy organic produces to put on it. But pay twice retail.

Next you will need a nice roll for it. Go to a bakery and tell them you want 1/2 hamburger roll but you need them to be made with a hint of honey and chives. Shopuld charge you about 5 bucks a roll.

Now to cook the burger you need to find a cook that feels burgers are beneath them to cook.

And befor eyou know it you have 6 burgers at 40 bucks a piece

Thanks, I stand corrected. How can I forget the bright neon sign.

The Eaton center is no more, guess my friend's curse worked, ha.

Is it my imagination or there were other locations in financial core suffered same fate. I recall female colleague complaining lack of replacement back then.

Webers up in Barrie.
Webers in Barrie is not the same as the Weber's on the highway. Although owned by the same person it is a different style restaurant. The burgers are just plain fresh chuck formed into a patty. The highway offers better atmosphere that's all. And as far as I know they will offer the patty blue rare. But once you put mustard relish pickels on it it's just another burger. the rest of the restaurants use wheat based products if you like that sorta stuff and spices. Ever try to get a rare burger at a burger joint. Tehy come out of the box grey. Yummmmmmm .....not:rolleyes:

Papasmerf,
Were you thinking of voting for me? Mine are smoked for 2 to 3 hours-
pink on the outside and cooked on the inside. I can't wait for summer.
Burgers shouldn't be smoked...that's just plain ridiculous

PS what type of wood do you use when smoking the various cuts listed below

Back Ribs
Shoulder

Dangerous Dan's is alright but it is a grease pit and the seating is uncomfortable. I think I only had the burger there once, not being a burger freak myself I thought it was okay. Nothing in there is high quality or tastes any different from a hundred grease pits out there.

The best value at dangerous dan's is the steak burger, for like 6 bucks you get a burger loaded with enough steak to make 2 burgers.

Maybe if I was loved burgers I would give this place a high rating but why would you want to eat an expensive burger when you could get a steak for a little more?

So if you ever go to dangerous Dan's skip the normal burger and get the steak burger.

If I do eat burgers I rather make my own with Pesident's choice sirlion patties and my george foreman grill. Tastes alot better and less grease than eating out.

Hey Lois,

If you ask Papasmerf the same question, I bet he'll say anything other than Canadian softwood. :p
