You can still go to St Lawrence Market and get decent cuts in the 10 buck range. Spend more and cut a bacon wrapped peppercorn filet.
Right now for a two person household our total grocery bill is, including a few Costco runs, St Lawr. Runs, farmers market, once a year Niagara on the lake for some artisanal stuff, Mennonite country run, etc, for all consumables maybe 800-1000 a month. But we eat well and have a stocked pantry. Includes cleaning supplies etc.
It's as much about looking for sales and stocking up. Bought bacon at 3.99 a pack, several in the freezer. Same with chicken, pork chops, and more. At the same time we buy local and a slight premium but get good quality.
