They have broken the law by not releasing it in full with the exception of redacting the names and images of the victims, and anything that compromises the secret service!!
It has also been politicized by releasing just photos of Clinton with no reference to the what the photos were supposed to reveal.
Typical of an autocratic administration!!

The law didn't have an enforcement method or penalty built in.
So unsurprisingly, they broke the law because without punishment, why wouldn't they?

The play here is narrative control.
They released this to get a narrative about "what's in the Epstein files" going, since the first narrative will usually settle in people's heads and this diminishes the impact of later details.

Christmas just seems to be next tranche.
I thought Blanche implied months before it is all out. (Including drops during Xmas-New Years)

If there was a whistleblower with access I think we would have seen it by now. (Although maybe things are being centralized in a way that gives someone an opportunity they didn't have before.)

But we would want a not Julian Assange in that case. The last thing we need is someone who would selectively release things in order to drive a narrative. We already have that.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer is demanding the Clintons appear in January or face contempt

In a letter sent to their attorney on Monday evening, Comer warned that a failure to appear for their new dates would result in immediate contempt of Congress proceedings.

"They're saying now that he's going to a funeral on that day, so we've been going back and forth with the lawyer," Comer told Fox News Digital the same evening. "We're going to hold him in contempt if he doesn't show up for his deposition."

The letter said, however, that they failed to provide "alternative dates" for their testimonies.
