Three excellent versions of "Fever", the first by Little Willie John from 1956.

Peggy Lee had a big hit with it in 1958, giving it a more sultry feel.

The McCoys updated it in 1965, giving it their own sound to give them a follow up hit to "Hang On Sloopy".

Johnny Kidd & The Pirates did the original "Shakin' All Over" in 1960 and took it to #1 on the UK charts, later the Guess Who had their first hit covering it in 1965 with Chad Allen as their lead singer.

Here's the original version of "Crying In The Chapel" by the Orioles in 1953. Elvis later covered and had a huge hit with the song in 1965.

"Release Me" was a hit for Ray Price in 1954.

Esther Phillips did a great version in 1962

Then Englebert Humperdinck had a huge worldwide hit with it in 1967.
Each so unique and interesting in their own way.

David Bowie - Sorrow the merseys i think did it first
The McCoys did it earlier, it was the flipside of "Fever" in 1965. You're right, the Merseys had the hit - it charted on the UK charts in 1966 and it's their version Bowie was familiar with.
Bowie's "Pinups" is one of my favourite albums, he covers so many of the songs that he really got into as a teenager in the mid-60's.

"Match Box" was first recorded by Blind Lemon Jefferson in 1927, it was later covered by Carl Perkins and then the Beatles as the flipside to "Long Tall Sally".

Here's the original version of "The Crying Game" which was a hit in the UK for Dave Berry in 1964. Shortly after, Brenda Lee also recorded it and had minor success with it.
Boy George gave it a new life in 1993 to many who never heard the song before when the movie of the same title came out.

I do like the version of the song. However, The Sex Pistols had nothing to do with it.
The song was made for dramatic effect and symbolism in the movie Sid and Nancy. Or did Gary Oldman Take Sids place?
Oldman sand it in the movie; but one with Sid singing does exist. I think Oldman was the better singer of the two.

And to add, what about this Rolling Stones Classic covered by the Flying Burrito Brothers:

And no doubt, the greatest cover song ever:

Here's the original version of "Wild Thing" by The Wild Ones. Six months later in 1966 The Troggs covered it and took it to #1 on the Billboard chart.

I always liked the raunchy remake by Fancy from 1974, good strip club song.

"Misirlou" is an interesting song with diverse styles of music, it was first performed in Greece by refugees with Turkish roots. It's used in Middle Eastern bellydancing, Jewish wedding music and strangely made it to American surf music.
Many people first head it when Dick Dale's 1963 version was used in Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction".

The Top Notes recorded "Twist And Shout" in 1961 before the Isley Brothers or the Beatles.
It was one of Phil Spector's first production jobs while he was at Atlantic Records, before he went on to create his legendary "Wall Of Sound" recordings.
