The Paul Butterfield Blues Band recorded a cool version of "Mary Mary" a year before the Monkees did theirs.
It was written by Mike Nesmith before they were formed.

in the world of soul music..there are songs that are covered by numerous artists...one of the greatest songs is A Change Is Gonna Come, done originally by Sam Cooke, 3 covers come to mind...Otis Redding, Al Green, and a live version done by LaLa Brooks, during Obamas, run for president...Brill, for all the soul fans..
That's a beautiful song!

"Baby Please Don't Go" has a long history with several great covers over the decades.
Big Joe Williams first recorded it in 1935, Them featuring a young Van Morrison redid it as the flipside of "Gloria" in 1965.
Aerosmith recorded a scorching version of it in 2004.

Wow, I didn't know JJ's version was a cover. Joan Jett's cover is identical to the original. Where's the artistry in that? The original is better.

I still prefer Joan Jett's version, her "yow!" makes it better.
But you're right, it's a bit too faithful a cover.

"Child Of Nature" was written by John Lennon after a lecture by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi about a "son of the mother nature". Paul McCartney and Lennon were both inspired to write songs about the same subject, yet only Paul's "Mother Nature's Son" was selected for the Beatles White Album in 1968.
John later scrapped his lyrics and wrote "Jealous Guy" with the same tune for his 1971 album "Imagine". His "Jealous Guy" wouldn't really be considered a cover song, but it was a reworking of an older tune.

Here's Roxy Music's excellent cover.

Johnny & Jackey recorded the original "Someday We'll Be Together" in 1961, it was later covered by Diana Ross & The Supremes and became a #1 hit for them in 1969. It was their final song together.
