"Devil With The Blue Dress On" was originally done by Shorty Long in 1964 as a slower bluesier tune. Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels covered it in 1966 and had a major hit with the song by cranking up the tempo.

Howlin' Wolf had a few of his songs covered by other artists, here's "Back Door Man", the flipside of "Wang Dang Doodle" from 1961. Willie Dixon wrote it for him.
The phrase "back-door man" refers to a man having an affair with a married woman, using the back door as an exit before the husband comes home. Not necessarily anal sex.
The Doors did it up nicely on their debut 1967 album.

NWA's cover of Automobile

Parliament's original:

Lyrically, I prefer NWA's version. I prefer the guitar/drum portion of the original.

Don & Dewey wrote and recorded this song originally in 1957, a cover version by Dale & Grace was #1 on Billboard the day JFK was assassinated.
I don't think the Warren Commission properly investigated the message the song was giving to Oswald. The FBI was preoccupied with "Louie Louie" which was rising on the chart at the time.

Donny & Marie Osmond later had a major hit with the song in 1974.

The Carpenters had a big hit with their cover of "Hurting Each Other" in 1972. Here's the original version by Jimmy Clanton in 1965.
Chad Allen & The Expressions recorded it the same year, before they became known as the Guess Who.

Cats in the Cradle. Many boys who have had a father can probably relate to the song, and as can many fathers who haved raised a son(s).

Cover version by Ugly Kid Joe

Otis Redding - Hard To Handle

Covered by The Black Crowes. Redding's version is better but it's a good cover still.

Metallica covers Ecstasy of Gold:

It's cool and interesting but guitar, bass, and drums is no substitute for a symphony.

Original by Ennio Morricone , fucking beautiful:

Recorded version, masterpiece. This is fight music.

Rivers of Babylon by The Melodians (1970)

The song is based on the Biblical hymn Psalm 137, a hymn expressing the yearnings of the Jewish people in exile following the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem in 586 BC
Real music.

Shitty disco cover by a group popular in Europe called Boney M:

Sublime did a decent cover on their debut album:

"Who's Sorry Now?" has been recorded several times since 1923, here's Big Bill Broonzy's version from 1952.

Connie Francis had a string of failures and this was her last recording chance, if this wasn't a success she would be dropped from the label. Her cover became a huge world-wide hit in 1958.

I have only looked at the first page so far.

If you are old enough to remember in the mid-70s everybody was doing 'The Loco-Motion'.

Beatles Fans - ukele covers

Late comer to this thread, I am also a collector of cover songs.

Beatles lovers...as a lurker of music blogs, this site is one of the most ambitious that I have come across.

This is an ambitious project. Roger Greenawalt and David Barratt started recording all 185 original Beatles compositions on the ukulele. They’re making a new song available every week until July 31, 2012, the eve of the London Olympics. And, in each instance, they’re working with different accompanying artists. As you’ll see, the styles and approaches can vary widely, and the ukulele sounds can be more or less pronounced.

There will be some pleasant surprises, some of the other versions....well..different tastes. I guarantee any fans out there will be spending/wasting a lot of time at this site.

enjoy

Cover Songs of Hot Chocolate

Hot Chocolate was an ambitious inter-racial band in the early 70's. They are best remembered for their disco type songs of the late 70's.

The tune Brother Louie was a big hit for the band the Stories in 1973. It was a cover of a far superior Hot Chocolate song.

Here's the link. Would add the video...but not sure how to do that.

Also the great tune by April Wine - You Could've Been a Lady, was also a Hot Chocolate cover. Still partial to April Wine, but I love the horn in their version.

Hot Chocolate recorded a couple of versions of it - this is may favourite.

Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Always Something There To Remind Me" was recorded originally by Lou Johnson back in 1964. Sandie Shaw charted with it the same year and then the synthesized cover by Naked Eyes in 1983 was a huge hit.
