Great tunes, Kyra! I can blame you for wasting my energy that could be spent more productively.

Here's the original version of "The Tide Is High", a Jamaican rock steady song from 1967 by John Holt with the Paragons.
Blondie gave it a wider audience and took it to #1 around the world in 1980.

I'm partial to the Blondie version but that's probably because I have some great memories associated with it. :)
I did a search on The Tide is High on youtube and found some really bad covers, I couldn't even bring myself to post them on here.

Here's another good song with some interesting covers...

There is a Pat Metheny instrumental version I was looking for but didn't see an upload yet.

"I'm So Glad" from 1931 by Skip James was covered by Cream on their first album in 1966.
When the band recorded the song, they made sure that Skip received the royalties he was entitled to, something that was not often done in those days. Skip had the opportunity to see Cream perform his song on stage before he succumbed to cancer in 1969.

Here's the original version of "Mama Told Me Not To Come" by Eric Burden & the Animals in 1967. It was written by Randy Newman and became a #1 hit for Three Dog Night in 1970.

Redding's original version is harder, raw, earthy, more soulful than Aretha Franklin's cover. Redding is the only singer that had/has more soul than James Brown.

That's a great original, it's cool how Aretha made it her own and it became a feminist anthem.

Here's the original of "You're No Good" by Betty Everett in 1963, Linda Ronstadt took it to #1 in 1975.

I always liked Grand Funk Railroad even though critics hated them. They had good taste in covering "Some Kind Of Wonderful" from 1967 by the Soul Brothers Six from Rochester, NY.

Manfred Mann chose so many good songs to cover, I like the original "Doo Wah Diddy" by the Exciters which they took to #1 around the world.

Another great original is "Hanky Panky" by the Raindrops in 1963 which Tommy James & the Shondells took to #1 a few years later.

Deep Purple started out by doing remakes of a lot of songs, their first hit "Hush" written by Joe South was recorded earlier by Billy Joe Royal.

ha ha ;-)

Roger Miller hit the country charts with "Me And Bobby McGee" in 1969, a few years before Janis Joplin. She recorded it shortly before her death and it was the second post-humous song to hit #1, the first being Otis Redding's "Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay".

Tony Bennett had a hit with "Blue Velvet" in 1951.

It was later covered by the Clovers in 1955, featuring a haunting sax solo. Too bad it isn't up on YouTube, please don't get me started on uploading songs there.
;-)

Bobby Vinton knew a good song, he took it to #1 in 1963.

"Ruby Baby" is a great Lieber & Stoller song first recorded by the Drifters in 1956.

Ronnie Hawkins did a nice cover of it in 1959.

But it's Dion who had the biggest hit, changing it to fit his style and making it his own song in 1963.

It's a crappy upload but here's the original of "You Better Run" by the Young Rascals in 1966. Pat Benatar did a good cover of it in 1980.

Here's the original "Mystery Train" by Little Junior's Blue Flames in 1953.

Elvis popularized it, and several other people have since covered the song.
I like The Band's version from "The Last Waltz" where they are joined by Paul Butterfield who did a great cover of it in the sixties.

Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys first recorded "Faded Love" in 1950, then Patsy Cline did a great cover of it in 1963.

It was from the the last recording sessions before her plane crash death.

"My Girl Sloopy" by the Vibrations from 1964 is a very cool song. The McCoys cover of it went to #1 as "Hang On Sloopy" the following year.
