Everyone is so excited about Gose but

Rasmus has a career Ba. 249 and OBP .320 OPS .749

And Gose ?

BA. 256 OBP .333 OPS .712

Here's the thing though, Gose's numbers is what he's managed to do in the Minors, Rasmus Numbers are based on what he's done in the MAJORS

Gose just isn't anywhere near ready

Some post first month observations:

* A little surprised with the over-all team hitting - Thought they would be better
* Starting pitching is where I thought it would be and if they are to compete, will need to remain there
* Bullpen is somewhat disappointing - The lack of a closer has cost the team

Surprises:

* Encarnacion - Who would have thought? Has taken up the slack from the other hitters
* Johnson - Has some pop in his bat and plays a good second base (great trade IMHO)
* Drabek - Nice to see him mature and keep his composure in the game
* Alvarez - Could be the ace of the staff

Disappointments:

* Bautista - Batting average as opposed to home runs. He seemed to tail off power wise at the end of last year, but his lack of extra base power is a concern.
* Escobar - Expect more from a lead-off hitter...Hopefully the recent move to the 2nd spot will allow him to relax at the plate
* Rasmus - Was hoping a new year and new team would result in a break-through year...still early and still time. Solid defensively (personally feel that a winning team has to be strong up the middle from a defensive stand-point)
* Lind - Time to end the experiment and bring up Cooper

Concerns:

* Romero - High ERA. Hoping that it is due to the current game at hand (Jack Morris won a lot of ugly games - He would give up 5 runs and win 8-5, but he would "up" his game and win the 3-2/2-1 games)...Hopefully Romero is similar
* Bullpen - I can't stress the fact that we need a stud who can come in and close out games. We can not win without this piece of the puzzle.
* Morrow - Bi-polar is the only way I can describe this guy. When he is on (like last night) he is the ace of any pitching staff...When he is off (aka Seattle), he is just some mop-up schmoe you use to eat up innings. If he is on 75% of the rest of this season we have a solid chance of going somewhere
* Lind - AA needs to make the tough call and bring up Cooper or another bat from the minors or through trade
* Thames - I find he is streaky and not as productive as we could have.

Expected:

* Arencibia - Shitty average but productive. He calls a great game/handles the pitching staff and despite a career low batting average, seems to have good numbers from a HR/RBI perspective.
* Bullpen - Middle relief has had it's high and low moments, like any team.
* Lawrie - The dreaded sophomore year has not reared it's ugly head. His enthusiasm is where I thought it would be. Hopefully he picks it up a little more from an offensive perspective and becomes more of a team leader by example as opposed to a cheer-leader.

Overall expectations are good as I believe that their starting pitching is the key to any success in 2012. If they land a bona-fide stud as a closer, or if Santos returns and performs as expected then the expectation meter will increase...

Nice to see that Farrell is not afraid to tinker with the batting order. Keeps things interesting!

Jays should trade for a starter.

We have a decent 4:
Ricky Romero
Brandon Morrow
Henderson Alvarez
Kyle Drabek

As can be seen Gose just isn't ready at this time.

How much more does Snider have to prove though. But there isn't a spot for him at present, unless they move him to 1st base.

Cooper seems to be a good contact hitter who is sacrificing HR power for average. That might be just what the doctor ordered for the Jays.

Chad Beck is pitching lights out early on. Hard to be that effective in the PCL. Would love to see him in a Jays uniform coming in late in games.

Yan Gomes is a very versatile guy who could help This team out as well.

It's a good time to be a Jays fan, they appear to have a lot of options.

back to back complete games ..either the angels are overrated or were turning that corner :p

i thought Jose had a bad start ...Pujols is batting under .200, 5 RBI, NO HOME RUNS!

You are right, Jose has had a bad start......and Albert's numbers are awful!
Every time Jose belts one I think, good he's coming out of it, but then watching him bat, next time up, he seems to be pressing too hard.
He takes a lot of good pitches and swings at some awful ones. The power is still there.

Agree with Ref when it comes to Lind. Bring in Cooper or at least move him out of the clean up spot to say the 9 spot. Take the pressure off.

30 is not so bad but I'd still need a .275 average.
Agreed
He needs to hit above .270 at least.
What's missing right now for Jose is the straight power to the alleys - no off-the-wall doubles or hard singles lately.
He just seems to be swinging for the fences right now.

That's what I see too. The other thing I noticed is he rarely swings at the first pitch and I think the opposition has picked up on it as it is often a strike followed by a breaking ball that he chases. two pitches 0-2 and he is pretty much done.
If he was to hit 30 HR bat 270 with about 100 RBI's I'd day, good year, well done!

When Aaron Hill was hitting 30 home runs a year, Cito Gaston complained that he was swinging at too many 1st pitches and not being patient enough at the plate.
I am not suggesting he swing at the first pitch every time, but you shouldn't take the first pitch every time either. As long as the pitcher believes he is taking they can and are throwing strikes on that first pitch putting him in the hole. The next pitch is often an off speed breaker that he takes a wicked cut at. Cito said go to the plate with a plan and I think Jose has forgotten that advice or he needs a new plan.
FYI I am a huge Jose fan and can't until he gets out of this slump or whatever it is. Jays need his bat!

I felt the pitching hasn't been good plus they seem to be making errors which always hurt.

I'll be watching tonight in the mods lounge. Should be a good game. I'm hoping for a four game sweep.
