well for starters I would not have invested 8 million dollars a year with a 3rd year option for 10.....if I was going to cut him at least give him another 200 at bats (or whatever the number is before he reaches the 1,000 plate appearances for next year clause) this is after all Frank Thomas we are talking about he has had slow aprils for a while

Good points but this is really a very slow April.

Also the GM doesnt have control over all the contracts, that goes back to the owners.

No, he was released because he couldn't do it anymore. What was most disappoining about Thomas, stats aside, was his approach at the plate. You could tell that he had no confidence in his ability. It was like he was hoping to get on with a walk because he couldn't get the bat around. He was constantly letting good pitches go, which was quite frustrating to watch.

This was a great move by JP. Thomas couldnt take the demotion and acted like an idiot.

I agree, don't blame the team, he was told he wasn't going to be the everyday DH because of his numbers. He should have taken it in stride, realized that his stats were low, and tried to turn it around....but NO, he has to sulk to the media. It was probably openly showing his displeasure that did him in. Too bad he had to leave a classless act.

Vernon can play defense. Thomas's sole purpose is to hit, if he's not doing that, then what good is he? This team cannot wait for Thomas to come around after the All-Star break.

Thomas could have avoided getting released if he didn't act so selfishly.

That's very respectful. Tease him by letting him get closer to the mark and just when he thinks he's got it made then pull the rug out from under him. Maybe cut him when he reaches 999.

Salsa criticizes them for giving him too much money and then criticizes them for cutting him because he can win games singlehandedly. It seems to me that guys who can win games singlehandedly get big contracts.

And it may not be JP's fault, many times its the owners that sign final contracts, often against the wishes of General Managers
Its all a delicate chess game, very little room for error.

This time it looks like the Jays made a boo-boo on Thomas, I guess they thought he could get 20/80 numbers this year

you are right his numbers are really bad but now we are one minus one dh (a position that could be taken by Stairs) I will tell you something though Reed Johnson with his .349 batting average in Chicago is starting to sound pretty good against stewart's .235 but that is just ANOTHER example of not respecting a player

**Johnny Mac is probably a gold glover and he keeps being teased with a starter's job
**Greg Zaun was promised a starting job last year and he was backup to Molina in 2006 and then was only a starter catcher when the deal with Barajas fell through..
**Thomas is the latest... you don't sign a 39 year old power hitter whose carrer is in decline give him a clause to make 10 million when he is 41 IF he makes 1,000 plate appearances, he made over 600 in the first season and then gets send packing??? well F@ck that, I would be pissed as well

my suggestion is for the Jays to hire Shack as GM.....
