Well The Big Hurt is gone. Too bad. Thomas got sent down today. I wonder who they are bringing in? Bonds perhaps? Hmmm..

Not gone, just taking a seat on the bench a few games. Just think, as bad as his number are, they are still higher than Big Papi's. He finally broke out last night with a grand salami and 5 RBI.

All Thomas needs is a few games against the Red Sox. He gets a few AB against Manny DelGagne and he is back on track. Mark April 29th on the calendar Frank. ;)

this is what Thomas has to say with regards to this move:

"Basically, I've been told that I'm not going to be in that lineup," Thomas said. "Gibby told me that this morning. I see it as something else is going on. We'll see how that plays out.

"You know what's going on and I know what's going on. We'll see how it plays out. I'm just a little frustrated right now. There are some things going on around here this year that I haven't been happy about."

apparently our idiot of a GM guaranteed 10 million dollars if Thomas gets 1,000 plate appearances in 2 years and he had over 600 last year....

Another great move by that genius, at least in his own mind, JP. There was no one last year going to give Thomas the kind of money JP did, and now they release him because he might hit his required number of at bats to guarantee his contract for next year. They knew going in that he wasn't going to be the best of people in the clubhouse, or at least they should have. But he didn't have the best of starts last year and they didn't seem to mind. If the Jays don't make the playoffs this year they better get rid of JP because they have no one to blame for the players on the field but him. And if you think Rolens will be a saviour think again, right now he has the body of about a 38 year old with all the injuries he has had. There are some cracks in the bullpen staff already, supposedly a strong point.

how many times does Big beak have to WASTE money before he is fired

ohka
zambrano
thomas...

With Thomas now out of the picture, the Jays don't have to worry about potentially owing him $10 million next year or an extra $1 million in performance bonuses this season. Toronto does have to provide Thomas with his full $8 million salary for this season, though

you mean for 16 games that he played

$8,000,000.00 divided by 16 games = 1/2 million dollars per game....

brilliant JP absoultely brilliant

Well, you got to give him a bit of credit for the six weeks in spring training when he did some stretching exercises and sit ups.

Jays release Frank Thomas

http://www.thestar.com/Sports/Baseball/article/416431

I like Frankie but he's clearly passed it.
Turns out he didnt take it so well

Thomas blasted the club through reporters.

"I'm angry. I know I can help this team. My career isn't going to end like this,” Thomas said on Saturday.

Thomas also said that he believed that money was the main factor in the decision. Thomas’ contract stipulated that he would receive a third year worth $10 million (U.S.) once he reached 1000 plate appearances over two years. He needed only 376 plate appearances this year to vest that option.

The clubhouse seemed glum this morning, as players digested the news.

“That’s baseball,” is all Matt Stairs would say about the move. For now, Stairs is the likeliest man to assume most of Thomas’ duties.

this is the LATEST example of not showing respect to a player, he was let go because of his contract for next year being 10 million, I guess in JP's mind it was a good move to pay him 8 million this year for 16 games:mad:

But what would you have done, Salsa??

Kept him even though he's severely under-performing????

No, he was released because he couldn't do it anymore. What was most disappoining about Thomas, stats aside, was his approach at the plate. You could tell that he had no confidence in his ability. It was like he was hoping to get on with a walk because he couldn't get the bat around. He was constantly letting good pitches go, which was quite frustrating to watch.

This was a great move by JP. Thomas couldnt take the demotion and acted like an idiot.

well for starters I would not have invested 8 million dollars a year with a 3rd year option for 10.....if I was going to cut him at least give him another 200 at bats (or whatever the number is before he reaches the 1,000 plate appearances for next year clause) this is after all Frank Thomas we are talking about he has had slow aprils for a while now as JP himself put it, this is the man who led the Jays in HR and RBI last season (now that is sad)

what's next? Barry Bonds

you probably wouldn't say that if it was YOUR money the one that is being wasted
I agree somewhat but having Thomas sulk at the end of the bench is a waste of $ too. If they can have someone else on the team with a positive attitude and is happy with their role the Blue Jay are better off IMHO.
