It must be generational. When I was 14 I can’t imagine having called a police officer - particularly one who was reading the riot act - the equivalent of dude. And, I can’t imagine even if I was in the right, my parents not saying what where you doing to upset the Officer.

Florida Police Dump Quadriplegic Man From His Wheelchair

Yes I saw that earlier today. The Sheriff was truly horrified. The Deputy has been suspended without pay, and three supervisors who failed either take action or notify superiors have also been suspended with pay.

Even the victim and his Lawyer say that they didn't think a lawsuit is called for given that the Sheriff seems to be taking every action to make things right, including referring the matter to the Florida State's Attorney's Office for review of possible criminal charges.

I hope his ass got sued. Douche Bag.[/QUOTE]

Hell, leave the lawyers out of it. You had better believe those ambulance chasers are already on the case. The world would be a much better place if there were less of those douche bags (the lawyers that is)

If you want to keep a copy of this video in .flv format, (flash video), do the following, (for Windows):

1) In a Windows Explorer window, Open Tools from the Menu bar.
2) Chose Folder Options..., (Folder Options can also be accessed from the Control Panel).
3) In the Folder Options dialog box, chose the View tab.
4) Enable the button for Show hidden files and folders, and click OK to confirm.
5) Open this directory: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files.
6) Check View in the Menu Bar to be sure you are in Details view.
7) Click on the Size tab, so that the largest files will be on top.
8) Look for the file called jerk-cop-harasses-skaters... (10,372 kb).
9) Copy this file to a non temparary folder, (you can't open files directly when they're in Temporary Internet Files, and you can't cut/paste them).
10) Open the video file with a flash video player. If you don't have one, there are many free ones available. There's a thread about that on here somewhere, or use a search engine to find one.

I want to see the whole video. He gets cut off saying he doesn't want to see the video on Y(ouTube?). I can only imagine that he threatened to take legal action if it ended up on the Internet. This would send me into irony overload.

It's hard to tell if the cop's shirt is yellow and black, or if he has the waistband pulled up to his chest, like a senior citizen.

Suspensions with pay are a real disincentive.

I think the policy should be that In Every case like this the cop & any other cop involved that does not take appropriate corrective action is suspended without pay. If they are exonerated, the get the pay back with interest. But Any unnecessary physical abuse of a citizen should result in their shitcanning. Zero tolerance.

Oh but some will cry "innocent till proven guilty". Think about this.... If you get arrested for something & spend time in jail & are quickly found to be innocent or the charges are dropped..... you just get released & aren't compensated for the time, $ & embarrassment. If you go through a long expensive trial.... you could spend hundreds of thousands of dollars & there is good chance that that $ is just lost....

A false or mistaken charge that leads to trial can bankrupt people even if they are innocent. So when every person found not guilty in trial gets their legal fees back you can whine about the cops having their pay temporarily suspended......

They should also make it absolutely clear that any officer conducting official business in the name of the state is a public figure & has NO expectation of privacy while working. Every damn thing they do should hold up to scrutiny...

Cops are human, yes.... but they are humans with body armor, weapons, superhuman legal powers & lots of equally powerful friends that will cover up for them just because..... Those that live up to the challenge should be given more respect than ANYone considered a celebrity today. Those that can't don't deserve any more respect than the average citizen & if you look around today you'll see that isn't much.

What is it that the cops & the police state cheerleaders always say? Oh yeah "If you've done nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about".

I'm pretty sure this is all spelled out in their collective bargaining agreement. And again, Criminal charges are likely forthcoming.

I agree with the cop's intentions, to teach the kid a lesson about respect.
I agree that many kids these days dont have respect.

but you also have to act like you deserve respect in order to get it. Simply being a cop doesn't cut it; as a civil servant in the public upholding the law they should be setting a positive example (especially to the kids). Now I'm not saying cops in general dont do this, but this individual certainly wasnt.

The officer said "you cant skate board here" in a rude tone... kid said "sorry I didnt her you "; then this cop goes off like a power tripping animal...he shoved the kid to the floor (assault) who wasnt even posing a threat

okay so they called him "dude" big f*cking deal, get the pickle out of your ass its not like they were offensive, combative or called him something derogatory

All this dumbass cop had to say is:

Cop: "Guys, you cant skate board here"
Kid: "Sorry i didnt here you"
Cop: "Well you heard me now...please take that to a park"

That conversation took what? 30 seconds? and I bet you the kids would have just left.

Also agree. People mouth off to the cops, or do similar things, and then wonder why they are getting so much grief.

The cop dumping the guy out of the wheel chair was just wrong. The cop should fry for that one.

I particularly loved the hypocrisy of the cop demanding respect after repeatedly calling the kid "son" (a disrespectful and pejorative turn of phrase I despise) and threatening to bust the kid upside the head on top of saying that if he was the kid's parents, he'd kick the kid's ass. That - along with the awesome outfit and vehicle - just screams respect me. Well played officer Rivieri.

And the funny thing is, I can't stand the majority of skateborders.

Cops are civil servants, they are there to perform a job. They aren't Gods and don't deserve any special treatment, leniency etc... while they perform a job for which they are getting paid, and paid well. No different than a garbage man.

They don't by default deserve respect..they have to earn it like everyone else.

A lot of cops seem to think they are special and deserve special treatment...they act like ego-maniacs, drive like idiots for no reason and lecture people that didn't ask for a lesson on life, "just give me my ticket and f-off already!"

If I were in that kid's shoes I'd be tempted to tell him to f-off...so why would I expect MORE restraint from someone who's less mature than I am?

I tend to agree...if that was my kid, that cop would be up shit creek too...and deservedly so. There is a long waiting list of other ego-maniacs ready to step into his place.

And that's why, as an trained adult police officer beholden to protect society, it's so much more respectful to react the way he did. Nice role model.

Being called "dude" isn't a sign of disrespect in today's Generation Y world. They should obviously expand this cop's diversity training to include generational language and mannerisms.

Better yet, they should just fire him.

I've always found that teenage kids will show respect to older people if they are first shown respect. Respect, is earned, not an entitlement.

I always found Montreal cops to be very cool. Once in the late 1970's I was sitting on Ste Catherine St, smoking some hash. Suddenly, I see this pair of dark blue pants stop in front of me, but I didn't look up. Then I saw a nightstick tapping on his thigh. I looked up, and the cop looked down at me and said "Put it out.".

I put the spliff on the ground, and extinguished it with my shoe. The cop walked away, so I picked it up, took it home, and rerolled what was left. He just didn't want to see that on his beat.

EXACTLY!

As the cop said, "your two friends have the sense to shut up and listen"....

Yeah, he went overboard dumping the kid on his ass but in this PC correct days of letting your kids do whatever they want, I can see how everyone would overreact to the tongue lashing (and that's what it was a TONGUE LASHING).

Maybe if that punk was raised by the other two kid's parents he would have gotten away scott free without so much as a talking to?

As the cop said "what about showing someone in authority the respect he deserves?"
