The Wire is the most realistic and amazing series I have seen.

Not for the casual viewer. If you like depth and have a good appreciation of pure class, invest time in The Wire.

Got hooked to The Wire well after the final season aired. I was streaming an episode, maybe two, a night. Got through the show pretty quickly.

I will be the odd man out and say I couldn't stand The Wire, I gave it about 9 episodes of the first season, a whole lot of generic over the top cartoon characters who you never connected with and were interchangable, the only interesting character was Omar, no women and just a straight up procedural drama.

Sheeeeeeeit, that was a fantastic show. (Though the season on the docks was a bit slow.)

Like others have mentioned, if you loved The Wire you should check out it's predecessor - Homicide: Life on The Street. I've always thought it such a shame that Andre Braugher doesn't get the recognition he deserves:

Yeah, I've never seen an episode of Homicide, but I've heard good things. The fact that it was based on a book written by David Simon (who created the Wire) and that several episodes with written and directed by Simon, as well as other members involved in the Wire makes me want to check it out at some point.
The fact that the Wire never won an Emmy award, because apparently the show was too 'complicted and depressing' and was set in Baltimore instead of LA or New York, completely invalidates the Emmy awards as a respectable barometer of the best in television, IMHO (as do numerous other things)

For you Wire fans, which seasons are your favourites?
Personally its
1. Season 4 (the one with the kids and schools)
2. Season 2 (the one with the Port)
3. Season 3 (Avon and Stringer's battle, almost Shakeaspearan in nature, for control)
4. Season 1
5. Season 5 (the one involving the newspaper). Although Season 5 was the weakest, IMHO, it is still leaps and bounds above 95% of TV out there.

Another of my fav Wire scenes (I could list them all day)

Idris Elba is endearing himself to The Great White North. Here's a clip he did with Sarah Gadon (A Dangerous Method, Spiderman 3) and Kim Coates (Goon, Sons of Anarchy).

I honestly think the wire is the greatest show of all time. You honestly have to watch it two times or more to really see how amazing it really is. The characters, the dialogue, the connections, everything... Truly a masterpiece.

Dexter is another show I've never seen, I understand that the show is going into its final season.

Dexter doesn't stand a chance!

Yvonne is following in the footsteps of Charlize Theron, but she has an advantage. When I first saw her on stage in NYC I was shocked to learn that she's Australian of Polish descent, so natural was her Brooklyn accent.

Yvonne speaks Scottish and Craig wets himself. Go to 3:40.

I remember being blown away by the chess lesson early in Season 1, with its analogy to drug dealing in the hood:

Although I loved the ending of 5 with the kids from 4 just stepping in and replacing the characters from season 1. Sort of showed the hopelessness (at least on a large scale).

I looked up “Best Law and Crime” shows and The Wire was #1…so I’ve been watching it and I’m up to somewhere in season four and it has been outstanding…

I binge watched the wire over a couple of weeks. Got the DVDs from the library and drank beer. Very good. It was my job search push when I was on my last couple of weeks of EI. (was off sick for a year). Anyway it was pretty good. Got a job on the day my EI ran out.
My favorite was The Shield.
