Brodie will likely play with Rielly.
They also have Lehtonen. He may be the new Barrie. Barrie was playing bottom pairing with Dermott when it was all said and done.
Dermott may play the right side on the bottom pair next year.
Leafs may still be looking for another defenseman with some teeth.

Leafs sign Brodie to a 4 year deal at $5 million per year
"He is a left-shooting defender with extensive experience on the right side for the Flames"

Musical chairs. Simmonds replaces Clifford. A Russiam replaces Kapanen. Brodies replaces Ceci or Barrie.

Torey Krug signs for $6.5mm annually. Doubt Dermott will be offered more than that despite Dubas's reputation for throwing money at RFA's like it is free.

not always sure...

It's too early for the musical chairs game; there are more changes to come.

Brodie's signing puts them well over the salary cap with 21 players signed, not including Dermott and Mikheyev who have no contracts yet.

Even if they don't sign Dermott and Mikheyev they would have to dump salary just to field a roster of 20 players, so sit back and crack a few beer - they probably won't be done with this roster until training camp in.... maybe December?

Dermott has a huge upside - high hockey IQ / talent. Leafs will likely sign him for what should prove to be a steal being he has been held back to third paring. Let’s hope anyway :).
Leafs will end up having to shed a few mil to make the cap - so more wheeling dealing to come.

Dubas confirmed that in one of his interviews. He said on the right side we have Brodie with Rielly or Muzzin, and Dermott and Holl.
If they can upgrade on one of those other guys, we'll be in pretty good shape.
Dermott didn't impress me last year, I hope he bounces back.

If you look at the intangibles : HEART / Toughness / sacrifice - I think Hyman is a guy I would consider very skilled and absolutely want on my team. You can’t teach HEART and GRITT.
I agree but skill is tangible. Heart and grit are not

Brodie, Rielly, Muzzin and Dermott are all left handed shots. Cecil and Barrie are right handed shots but one or both could be gone. New guy Sandin (if he makes the Leafs) is also a left handed shot.

"The usual waiting period however is three years. Here's the list of players who have gotten in the first year of their eligibility: "

"1992: Marcel Dionne, Bob Gainey & Lanny McDonald
1991: Mike Bossy & Denis Potvin"

Winning battles along the boards and puck retrieval take skill, heart and grit. That’s what Hyman does best. In the Columbus series he was neutralized by a bigger Seth Jones though.
That doesn't take skill. It takes heart grit and guile.

I’d say it takes a combination of heart, strength and techniques. First off you need foot speed to get into forechecking, you need heart/grit/strength to get into a physical battle and you need techniques like the angle you hit, when and how to push off or take half a step back, shift your weight to gain balance etc. All these take skills. Just like a wrestling match the stronger guy doesn’t always win. Just heart and grit won’t get you to the pro level.

Barrie off to the Oilers for 1 yr.
Ceci will be next to go. Brodie and Sandin (cheap$) are their replacements. Where's the upgrade? All Leaf Defensemen are left hand shooters except Holl.
