Gainey and Carbonneau are the most overrated players of all time...Without going into chapter and verse on "skills", I'll just say Hyman has a different set of skills that makes him valuable to a team. For example, Gainey and Carbonneau were not elite scorers but they are both in the HHOF.

I've always like Simmonds myself.
I've noticed he's particularly effective down low on the power play.
He's listed at 6'2 185lb's......Plays bigger than that. I've never seen him back down from anybody. He's a good fighter. Probably has those long arms.
He's got some pretty bad plus / minus stats though. Wonder what the deal is with that?

Who would you rather have...Bob Gainey or Mike Bossy...Guy Carbonneau or Peter Stastny?
I’m not saying they were shit but hall of fame is a little much, they invented an award so Gainey could win it!
in the 1976 Canada Cup the Russian coach called Gainey ‘the best technical hockey player in the world’, that team featured Clarke, Dionne, Esposito, Hull, Lafleur, Perreault, Shutt, Sittler among others...those guys are Hall of Famers.
At 32?.........Yes he's past his prime but he should have something left in the tank for a year or two shouldn't he?

Since this is a Leaf thread, I won't go into chapter and verse on Gainey and Carbonneau, except to say they are multiple Selke winners and played on multiple Stanley Cup winners.
They are overrated...Gainey played on powerhouse teams that had Lafleur, Shutt, Lemaire, Robinson, Lapointe, Savard, Dryden, was a third line winger with a career high of 27 goals...Carbonneau had a career high of 24 goals, those aren’t HOF numbers.
Of course the skill level of Bossy and Stastny overwhelm both Gainey and Carbonneau. And given the choice you would pick them.
But to win cups you need shut down players that can negate other teams strong points. Players that sacrifice offence for defence. Carbonneau was one of the best faceoff men in his generation. You win the faceoff and you control the play.
Never saw Bossy on the penalty kill ever, Christ he never when in the corners. Ask Dave Williams,lol. Stastny was a little more well rounded if I recall but was hardly ever asked to fulfill those duties.
I would venture to take a guess that if analytics were available in those days both Carbonneau and Gainey would chart out quite high. I know their teammates raved about their contributions to their Cup winning teams.And that's they key to winning cups. You have to have a well balanced team that can compete in all areas of the game.
I don't discount either of them as being HOFers. They helped change the game.

Bossy wasn’t on the penalty kill because he was always on the power play...for those Islander teams Butch Goring was on the penalty kill, he’d be a better candidate than either Gainey or Guy Carbonneau for HOF, compare their careers, why isn’t Butch Goring in the HOF?
I don't think either belong. If Gainey has the same career on any other team no way he gets in. It's because of the team he was on. With other great players. It's kind of like the Steelers of the 70's who had multiple hall of famers because they won 4 super bowls. Don't get me wrong they were really good players just not HOF. How many HOF's were on that great Montreal team? Well I like Goring over Gillies in the hall if that means anything. Never scored over 23 goals in a season with the Islanders if we are going by your definition of a HOF contributor.
To the best of my recollection he was never on any international teams. Could be wrong though on that one. Going by memory.
i remember him for his work ethic, Helmut and not taking any penalties.
Goring was on a Canada Cup team...Clark Gillies is another example of a iffy HOFer...
I think Simmonds will be okay for a year to add some grit and bang some bodies hard in limited minutes every game. He came cheap and no one will be looking for him to put up big scoring numbers, or play regular or power play minutes on the top two lines. He's a hard nosed third line player who can cause some damage and make opponents get rid of the puck fast when he's on the ice. Might be interesting to see him and Spezza pair up, although I'd rather see Simmonds and Jumbo Joe from SJ on a third or even fourth line combo. He can also deliver effective payback on teams taking advantage of AM and MM without taking a penalty at the same time. Seems like a low risk pick up that could deliver lots of upside.
If you look at the intangibles : HEART / Toughness / sacrifice - I think Hyman is a guy I would consider very skilled and absolutely want on my team. You can’t teach HEART and GRITT.
He has had allot of time off - so will be healthy and “LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE”! While I still love and miss Martin!
