What a crazy start to the game last night. I have to admit that was an enjoyable watch, even if we lost. The intensity and the physicality reminded me of an NHL playoff game. I frigging hate Matthew Tkachuk its between him and Marchand for my most hated player in the league.
Now we need to beat Finland tomorrow to reach the final. We should be able to do that.

That's the 3 way tie breaker. By US beating Canada in regulation that nullifies the possibilty of a 3 way tie.
The two way tie breaker is head to head result and that goes to Canada for beating Sweden in OT.

If Canada beats both Sweden and Finland in OT they can still be out to Sweden with only 1 win and that win handed to them on a silver platter by the US. In effect Sweden could make the Finals not having beaten any other team in the round robin legitimately. The freebie win vs the US notwithstanding.

The States won't let Sweden win. Too much pride and bravado.

I was worried before the game when I heard Freiman reporting that many of the Swedish players told him the Swede most motivated to play against Canada was Nylander.
no need for CANADA to be worried about Nylander. he better keep his head up monday against the USA, or brady and matt or Charlie Mac will lay him out, Guaranteed.

also, Bill Nylander goes scoreless for Sweden, and is a minus player. did you see him yelling at the ref when he fell down in the last minute of the FINN game. EFFIN big baby.

Finland can also guarantee a Final by beating Canada in regulation.
Both have beaten Sweden in OT and lost to US in regulation.
This game should really be played after the US Sweden game.
Since there may be nothing on the line for both Sweden and US by the time they play their game.
Of course if Canada had beaten US the opposite would be true.
Perhaps the schedulers were anticipating just that.
If the Sweden US game was played first both games would be meaningful regardless of what happens in the first game.

Game theory:
Imagine if the US Sweden game was played first and Sweden beat US in regulation.
US is already in the Finals so nothing to play for.
Then both Finland and Canada would need a regulation win to advance.
An OT game and both are out regardless of who wins.
In this scenario what would the teams do if the clock is winding down in regulation in a tied game.
I'd say it's a game of chicken. One team has to pull their goalie. Whoever blinks first.

I don't follow hockey guys but I think Booing National Anthem is really bad. We ended up losing to US. Check the headlines for Fox. They are laughing at us. We are Canadians right? We are better, humble then them. Not right guys.
I agree 100%. Booing would have been ok if they showed Trump's face on a giant tv screen before the game started, but to boo the national anthem of the American players, many of whom play for Canadian NHL teams, only served to fire them up. It may also have been the cause for the "3 fights in 9 seconds" that started the game.

I imagine a lot of Trump supporters are very disappointed at what he (and Elon) have done since the inauguration. More crazy than what they expected!

If our team makes it to Boston for the final game expect the American fans to pay us back big time...

Not at all. I think Trump's doing a great job. Way better than if Kamala would have been elected president!!

Kamala would have been terrible. But Trump is a lunatic. His actions speak for themselves, so I have no need to give examples.

He has no regard or respect for the law, domestic or international, and the Constitution.

I'm a centrist. Not sure such a thing is very big in the U.S.

America is way too polarized.

As Lincoln (and Jesus apparently) said, "a house divided against itself cannot stand"...

From The New Yorker magazine today:

"We Might Have to “Shut Down the Country”
Anthony Romero, the A.C.L.U.’s executive director, talks about what he thinks could happen if the Trump Administration defies the authority of the courts.
By David Remnick
February 16, 2025

In less than a month, Donald Trump has come through on his promise to exact retribution on his enemies and to set about overhauling the federal government. Whole agencies are potentially being tossed, to use Elon Musk’s heedless language, into “the wood chipper.” To understate matters radically, Trump has sparked many debates. One of them is how close is the United States to a constitutional crisis: Are we headed toward one, on the brink, or already there?
If there is going to be a concerted resistance to Trump’s blizzard of executive actions, it will likely play out largely in courts across the country and, ultimately, in the Supreme Court. And if the Administration spurns court orders, what happens next will conceivably determine the fate of democracy and the rule of law in our time. Chief Justice John Roberts himself said in December, as the Biden Administration began closing shop and the incoming Trump Administration made its intentions increasingly clear, that in our current politics, we now live with the “specter of open disregard for federal court rulings.” And what would such a conflict look like with MAGA loyalists like Pam Bondi leading the Justice Department, Pete Hegseth leading the Department of Defense, and Kash Patel leading the F.B.I.? Some legal scholars recommend a keep-your-powder-dry attitude for the time being. But there has arguably not been such a potentially dramatic test of the country’s constitutional order since the Civil War era.

The American Civil Liberties Union, a major player in this drama, has been quick to file lawsuits on, among other issues, birthright citizenship, which the Administration seeks to eliminate. Anthony Romero, who is fifty-nine and grew up in public housing in the Bronx and later in New Jersey, has been the executive director of the A.C.L.U. since 2001. I spoke with him recently for The New Yorker Radio Hour. His sense of resolve and confidence were all in evidence. But if things go south and Trump defies the courts, he said, “we’ve got to shut down this country.” What does that mean?

You can't tell Montrealers what to do, ask @jalimon.

Showing Trump on the big screen would have been terrible!

I was very disappointed when Canada responded and did those beginning-of-game fights. The US beat us at the mind game.

As far as the booing, most Quebecers liked it. :) It's one big show. If you do not want to get booed, do not sing the anthem; go straight to the game. And right now I do think it's the opinion of every Canadian.

Just Quebec has more non-salted water than any country combined. Canada has more lakes than any other country combined. All of what Trump says is bull shit (as most of the time) the only thing he wants from Canada is our water.

The only thing he needs is American stupidity.

And unfortunately there may be more of an abundance of that than our fresh water.

Unless the playoff version of Hellebuyck shows up I don't know how any team has a reasonable chance to beat what I have seen so far.
The US team is playing a tough, hard hitting game like Canada used to play in these tournaments. Canada's biggest weakness is in goal. The USA is also playing for Johnny, which is inspiring and I give a lot of credit to them for the game sweater award and how they are treating the family. Class move.

US seems bigger and more physical from what I saw....They have Chris Kreider sitting out. I mean you know you're deep when.

The Tkachuk brothers look it right to Canada at the opening faceoff. That's got to be planned doesn't it?

The whole Johnny Gaudreau death situation is very disturbing and poignant. Yes including him in their team is an awesome gesture.

Full marks to them for that.
