Canada loses to US, and beats Finland in OT... What happens then?

ETA: Looks like it would come down to goal differential. Canada gets it unless they get blown out by US tonight.
If Sweden fails to get 3 pts vs USA. Canada is in with an OT win over Finland. Canada would have more wins than Sweden.

If Canada beats Finland in OT they can still be out if Canada loses to US and Sweden beats US in regulation.
Which could make for an interesting scenerio. Canada plays Finland first before US plays Sweden.

If US beats Canada in regulation tonight and Canada beats Finland in OT then US could if they wanted to tank the game against Sweden and lose in regulation in order to play Sweden in the Finals. Sweden has lost to both Finland and Canada so why wouldn't US want to play Sweden in the Finals.

Imagine the last minute of regulation in the US Sweden game and it's tied. Both teams could conceiveably pull their goalie.

If Canada loses to US in OT, however, then Sweden cannot catch Canada if Canada beats Finland either way. Hence why this point scoring system makes things interesting.
That's why the last two games should be played at the same time. imagine if the USA tanked to play Sweden, that would sham for the tournament.

Correction on this: " If Canada loses to US in OT, however, then Sweden cannot catch Canada if Canada beats Finland either way."

If US beats Canada in OT and Canada beats Finland in OT and Sweden beats US in regulation then
the US still plays Sweden based on 3 way tie breaker.

So Canada losing to US in OT and beating Finland in OT does not guarantee a Final. The 3 way tie breaker is regulation wins and both Canada wins were in OT whereas both US and Sweden would have a regulation win.

Sweden can make the Finals over Canada by having only 1 win. Canada can be out with 2 wins one of which was over Sweden. Bottom line is Canada must beat Finland in regulation to guarantee a Final if they lose to US either way.

That seems like a flaw in the tiebreak system. 2 wins in OT should be better than one regulation win. Let's hope that it doesn't come down to that.

ETA: First tiebreaker is head-to-head.

Is there any reason we can't have a 1972 Summit Series style, best of 5 between US and Canada in September 2025?

This rivalry doesn't need to have an international tournament surrounding it or a gold medal awarded to make it work.

I liked it better when it was Canada and Russia…now we got all these other countries that make it dull

Canada will have to beat Finland in Regulation. The last time Crosby and Canada lost to the USA was in the 2010 Olympic round-robin, Canada came back to win the Gold medal against the USA.

They could still get by with just an OT win. However, don't want to count on a US team who will have a let down in energy and urgency next game after clinching... especially against a Sweden team who will be playing with urgency.

You can bet that The USA will try hard to beat Sweden. The USA are cocky and loves a rematch with Canada.

Have to say Matthews was very noticeable. He needs to play like this in the playoffs.
Marner didn't notice him at all until the turnover with the goalie pulled.
They're going to need Makar if they play US in the Finals.
Bottom line if Canada can't beat Finland in regulation they don't deserve the title regardless.
