As I have said, there are many ways to invest. The long term holds are your reserve funds. The short term gainers are your producers. Never be afraid to pay taxes, it only means you are making money.
its a hurdle I struggle with.

fear of losing and investing in something bad and paying taxes are my biggest concern. I think I would be more apt to try different methods if I have passed my retirement nest egg goal and not working for a living. I really hate paying the government.

I like reading these boards and it's like social media. All those lovely gains, wonder about those losses and the total portfolio return lol

I bet it feels quite good and freeing.

being taxed at a more favorable rate would be better as well.

Id like to educate myself further before attempting. did you use any specific materials and or resources to learn how to do so?

Question for the investing guys and girls, do you have background in finance or just started to do it in your spare time?

If someone would like to start what or how would you recommend.

Sold all 3,500 shares of Baytex (BTE.TO) for a $2,500 loss. It was bleeding too much for me.
Very surprising it dropped 10% in less than a week

Bought 500 shares of Suncor @ 45.24 per share
I call bull shit. It was announced ( yesterday ) May 9, 2022 9:57 PM EDT that Suncor profits more than tripled from a year ago. Most oil companies profited big in the last year as well. Phil C., show us you can do more than read the biz news.

If you want slow, sure and steady growth these stocks will take you through tough economic times.

Suncor Energy Inc. (SU.TO)

Enbridge Inc. (ENB.TO)
TC Energy Corporation (TRP.TO)
+ all 5 big Canadian bank stocks

Gee, U-man ( Phil C. McNasty ) about 98.9% of Canadian stocks went up today. I bought some stock earlier in the week and Filo mining yesterday. I gave the hot tip ( Filo Mining ) to my lady friends ( with benefits ) I think I will give them another hot tip when I see them.

Filo Mining Corp. (FIL.TO) + 43.57%
Journey Energy Inc. (JOY.TO) + 20.74%
NuVista Energy Ltd. (NVA.TO) + 10.04%

U-man, I hear you had a + 30% stock today.
(
Permex Petroleum Corporation (OIL.CN) ) +30.00%

Now that it went up 30% you only have to make a gain of another 40% before you break even and get your .33 cents a share back.
( ref. post #204 )

I am sure you think I pick stocks after they have gone up. If you do there are many examples of where I pick the stocks before they go up. Here is a recent examples from the Any good stock pick suggestions?? thread.

I bought some.............

Sigma Lithium Corporation (SGML.V)
Journey Energy Inc. (JOY.TO)
Itafos Inc. (IFOS.V)

.............last week. What better way to
offset a loss than a gain?

Sigma Lithium Corporation (SGML.V) bought Apr. 12, 2022 @ $18.62 - Sold May 5, 2022 @ $20.75 = $23.79 Profit

Journey Energy Inc. (JOY.TO) bought Apr. 11, 2022 @ $5.35 - Sold Apr. 18, 2022 @ $5.90 = 10.28% profit

Itafos Inc. (IFOS.V) - Retained by Ceiling Cat Holdings

More often than not my recommendations are posted days or weeks before they go up. You may verify my earnings at Yahoo Finance - click on the Historical Data above the chart. So you see, I am really a gainer.

bought GRN TSX @ 0.75 per share for 1000 shares. I think its an interesting little company doing some cool things with recycling waste for energy. its something to try my hand with. not looking for a quick return but if all goes well I think there is potential in the long run.

lets see how trying something outside of my regular blue chips pans out.
