Jays are losers again and will watch all other top end free agents sign with other teams Be prepared to be watching the Bisons here in Toronto Next Season
I'd say that it is a huge overpay to a dude that isn't even a good defender.

Jays now have to use alot of that money to improve the team or their run at Soto will appear to be a smokescreen.

I don't trust the trifecta of Rogers, Shapiro and Atkins, cheapskates who will do nothing impacful to improve the team as long as there are bums in the seats. They should sign Santander just to save face!

The Jays’ mismanagement aside, they are trying so they deserve some credit. But MLB is dead to me. I used to love it but it’s gotten so ridiculous that why bother?
The Dodgers can be penciled in for a championship once every three years at least.
Toronto will have to pay an absurd premium for free agents to come here.
I know it’s been like this for many years, but the Ohtani contract that helps the Dodgers buy more and more talent was the final straw for me.
The Jays’ ruining the contract-friendly primes of Vlad and Bo doesn’t help either, but MLB has let the sport go to hell.

I don’t blame the players either, the owners want to give the players these contracts then the players should happily take it.

yip, stupid owners trying to buy a winner again. Glad I sold my share of the Jays 2024 season tixs. Didn't miss attending an MLB game or watching on the tube either. Same select teams always in the playoffs for the past decade plus. Waste if time and money IMO. MLB SUCKS!

That was a career year for him. Never came anywhere near that again. But i agree, this contract will bite them in the ass big time.
I know I’m being sarcastic. Mostly because Jessie Barfield was a much better fielder as well. Cannon for an arm.

… I thought the Mets and the Yankees had an unwritten rule not to go after each other‘s free agents. And apparently the Yankees offered Soto 760,000,000 over 16 years….. but instead he took 765,000,000 over 15 years from the NYMs…. Wow that’s pretty stingy. Soto is going to have one hell of a Bronx cheer!

Vlad will hang up the phone at anything below $50m per year. That might still not be enough but $35m won’t even get a counter offer.
0% chance that Vlad gets $50 million and unlikely that it hits $40 (might get close). Soto has been the far superior offensive player throughout his career due to Vlad's inconsistency in 2022 and 2023, and was even a bit more impactful player in 2024 when both were really hitting.

Now I would say the baseball world was thinking something around $30-35M with term (9-10 years) to Vlad before this signing Now it will be at least $35M (but probably less than $40) with probably an extra year or two of term. That is the biggest impact of S

If I had to guess Vlad will be 12/440 ($36.5m per)

Vlad Sure. Bo, no way. His future contract value is overrated by some - he is not an elite MLB player. Good (at least prior to 2024), but not elite. The contract signed by an elite player like Soto will have zero impact on his future contract.

At one time Bo's value was because he was a "great hitter for a SS". Now there are many SS that have surpassed or equalled or nearly equalled his 2023 offensive performance (let's ignore his 2024 one as an outlier) and they can actually field. This really hurt his contract potential.

I'm content with not offering him a contract this winter, and letting see where it plays out.
Vlad is a different story.

There has been quite a bit of variance in the AL though in recent years.
Kansas City, Detroit, Cleveland, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Baltimore are all low to moderate payroll teams that have made the AL playoffs in 2023 or 2024.in

Toronto is a top 8 spender in baseball. We are not the top spender, but we are up there. Enough budget to be a consistent top finisher in the AL if we had better management and player development - we need more pre-arb and arb players contributing at high levels in MLB

Its a Shatkins issue not a payroll issue, because we are competitive in terms of payroll.

I was surprised to see that the Phillies gave Romano 1/$8.5. (Was actually higher than his projected arb number of $8.0 million). That being said, I "think" I am glad we didn't give that to him. Said "think" because let's see how Shatkins spends there reliever money.

There are a decent amount of high leverage relievers out there, but Romano coming in at 8.5 (and Chapman earler at 10.5), shows that relievers will not be cheap this offseason.

At this point does Bo actually want to play in Toronto?

I've always felt he was a second baseman. Love to see him in pinstripes with that hair and beard off.

Of course we would gladly take Vlad as well.

Losing Soto hurts but that contract?...Jesus.

Jansen got the same deal from Tampa.

How will Soto's departure affect Judge?

They will go all in with free agents...Names being mentioned are Christian Walker, Alex Bregman, Pete Alonzo.

There's a thought they might try and trade for Cody Bellinger. The Cubs might want to get out from underneath his contract.

A left handed hitter behind judge would be preferable. Judge will be 33 in April. They have to move him off centre soon.

The Mets out bid the Yankees by 45 million in the end. Soto is a pure mercenary. Also a potential HOFer.

Yanks believe Jasson Dominguez is their next superstar. They don't have much at AAA that stands out.

Calib Durban might end up at second. They moved on from Gleber Torres it seems.
