They knew she had a gun and encouraged her to get rid of it. The police have even stated they wanted to take her guns away but were unable as the state doesn't have a red flag law.
In your view does that include guns like ARs? They are just the M16 with a different lower receiver to eliminate the full auto function.
I have heard some commentators say that one big reason for the AR's popularity is the weekend warrior crowd wanting to have the civilian version of the military weapon. They also worry that the army changing to the Sig Saur M7 will cause that crowd to buy it's civilian version instead and it's heftier round will cause far more damage in mass shootings.
Canadian law does not allow you to carry anything in public for self defence. You can carry a blade if you can convince the police that you have a legitimate use for carrying it as a tool. If you do factory work and regularly open boxes, you will likely have no issue carrying a blade to and from work. If you're on your way to a camping trip with a machete and bear spray hanging from your pack, you're okay. Meanwhile if you tell the cop's you're carrying a blade, pepper spray, or a baseball bat for self defence, expect charges.
I doubt you'd ever catch flack for carrying a multi-tool with a blade in it (it would also be a very poor choice for self defence if that's your real reason).
Canadian law also bans assisted opening knives (switch blade, balisong, gravity knife) and potentially a cop could give you a hard time over a folding knife where the setscrew has been loosened to allow it to be opened with a flip.
p.s. NY state has a very poorly written law that says any non-resident can not carry a knife. The way it's worded, you could technically be charged for using a butter knife. Every time I've camped there, I always bring my cheapest camping knife just in case it gets confiscated.

Mass shootings used to be dominated by middle-aged white men at some point. (Or maybe just 30s-40s?)

I think it was @Zoot Allures I was debating with regarding regarding schools. I was keeping it Academic while he did bring up culture. In this regard with school shootings, Zoot I agree with you.
I’m so glad my bratling is out of school and not having kids. Not that Canada is like the US but it can happen at any time. It will happen in Canada at some point and I feel like it will be a Toronto school that it happens.
It has, to a small extent, happened here about 35 years ago. A drive by shooting in Pickering, I recall. An incident at a catholic high school in Downsview. I feel so sorry for the majority of the young kids attending schools these days.
