The Ontario Science Centre is closing. What does that mean for the community?

Ontario Place and the OSC have been useless for years and crumbling. Consolidating them into a year-round destination makes perfect sense.
Building a vibrant community within the city that's close to transit benefits everyone.
Ontario Place had 1 million visitors last year, as it is its a great park.
Now it'll be a 95 year lease to some foreign company that's having major issues with its other spas.

Why do you think its smart that Ontario will have to pay $650 million for a parking lot for a private company on public land?

More misinformation spreading from you...All the land that was identified for development was within an hour or less from the city and all those areas are already serviced by Go.
Wow, an hour away from the city.
Like I said.

Ontario place is useless and not a year-round destination. Should have way more than 1 million visitors per year.
OSC moving there will help for sure.

It will have more public space than it has now and will attract many more people.

How much do you think it will cost to pave over parts of Lake Ontario for the spa with those new plans, skoob?

You think the plans are finalized and that they would pave over water? hahaha

The NDP propaganda never ceases to amaze me.

No matter how many times I give you the reports you won't read them or accept them.
Here's what happened.

DoFo made a deal with Therme with a 95 year lease. Nobody knows the details as he made it secret and even passed legislation so that he can't be sued in the future over possible fraud.

That deal included a clause to build a parking lot, the bill for that is between $500 and $650 million, because its below water level. If Ontario doesn't build it Therme can sue the fuck out of Ontario because its in the lease.

In order to try to cover over that DoFo decided to close the Science Centre and move it to Ontario Place, so that he can try to hide the massive parking lot expense in the massive costs of moving the Science Centre.

Its idiotic, its skoobid.

All of it could be fixed by moving the spa to the Ex grounds, where there is transit, parking and infrastructure.

Acting Auditor General Nick Stavropoulos writes that Ford contractually obligated the province to provide some 3,000 parking spaces for the private Therme spa, writing that "the decision to relocate the Science Centre was presented to government decisionmakers as contributing to a site-wide parking solution integrated with the new building."

He notes that per the 2023 proposal for the overall revitalization of the Ontario Place lands, "a site-wide parking solution was needed to meet the province's existing legal obligations under the lease it had signed with Therme Group and for its potential lease obligations with Live Nation ... and future tenants."

If the province does not fulfill this and other terms of its contract with Austria-based Therme Group, it will have to pay out a penalty. The solution? Move the Science Centre and include parking in the new build to "dispel public/stakeholder concerns relating to cost and impact on the environment."

This means that while Ford's leadership claims building a new facility at Ontario Place rather than maintaining the old one would save the province $250 million — costing $1.047 billion rather than $1.304 — not all costs were considered in that estimate.

The Auditor General thus says that the resolution to include the Centre in the Ontario Place plans was made with "preliminary and incomplete cost information." There is also the fact that the government was considering the move years before it, and the revitalization in general, were announced.

If you're going to build a year-round facility you need parking and a more tourist-friendly location.

From the report:

4.4 Waterfront Location Deemed Better for Tourists The 2021 Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Stage 1 planning documents for the relocation of the Ontario Science Centre to Ontario Place acknowledged that, “given a greater distance for most residents and school groups in suburban areas, these two market segments may witness a decline in percentage terms.” It was noted that, by comparison, the Ontario Place location and venue was more likely to provide the centre with access to a larger slice of the tourist and events rental markets.

Modified your post for accuracy.

Guaranteed to to do nothing help the housing crisis.
Do you have the site plans that show the type of housing proposed and the pricing? ie lot prices, sizes, type of dwellings, etc?

So you think paying $500 million for a parking lot for a private company is smart?
wow

You mean all this time you still don't know how many houses were supposed to have been built?
You are such a bullshitter.

How much should a parking lot that can accommodate 3000 vehicles underground cost?

You expect people to visit if they can't park anywhere? Like drive their electric scooters there?

When you jump into someone else's conversation you always fall on your face because you ignore the original question and make stupid assumptions.

Shack said it would do nothing for the housing crisis, so I asked him about the details that would make him think as such.

Those details would include how many units, lot sizes, prices, etc. If he doesn't have those details then it's just uninformed speculation driven by bias.

In other words, you two are peas in the same pod no?

You think it costs $166,000 per parking space to build a parking lot?
DoFo could build it in the Ex where there is transit and parking, saving that $500 million.

Why do you back wasting public money so much?

You're saying that all this time your defence of the Greenbelt has been 'uninformed speculation driven by bias' since you have no idea how many houses would ever be built in that $8 billion scandal you are still defending?

Why do you back wasting public money?

Do you? If not, my opinions carry as much weight as yours. History has proven Ford will want mainly low density, expensive single homes that will help his developer friends to max out their profits.
