I honestly cannot see the Jays winning the Ohtani sweepstakes. Could the Jays afford to spend on him? Yes, but will they? Probably no. I feel like this (and the Soto trade rumours) are either being spread by the Jays to get the fanbase excited or forgiving for the unmitigated disaster of the post season, or by other execs/agents to build up the price for whomever wins the bidding for Ohtani or Soto...I'm very cynical about this. But, I would love to see the Jays actually win something like this. It would make a huge splash in the game!

Money for Ohtani isn't the issue here. The Jays won't get outbid. It's the It's the whole west coast thing, and does believe he's the one that makes Toronto a contender.

Yeah I mean I believe the Jays are making it a difficult decision for him, but I just can't see the Jays landing him.
I was in downtown Los Angeles in July. I spent a good amount of time in Little Tokyo. I didn’t want to leave. The most unbelievable sushi restaurants, a Takoyaki specialty shop, plus an amazing Japanese grocery store… I was eating mochi and drinking Sapporo all day. I literally did not want to leave.

But what I find very interesting is that this is not an automatic slam dunk for the Dodgers. Something is making Ohtani consider other options and delay his decision. I also heard/read a broadcaster or journalist or something I forgot who, say a few months ago that it is disrespectful in the Japanese culture for him to leave the Angels and go to the Dodgers. I mean we are talking half $1 billion does it really matter? Lol

A nice off season move would be to can Shapiro, Atkins and Schneider and trade Vlad for prospects. The definition of madness is hoping the same jokers who run the team now will be able to accomplish anything different.
It will not happen in the 2024 season, but when 2024 starts to look like 2023 the knives will come out.

Keep dreaming on the Shapiro front. He's not going anywhere for a long time.

Phil, nothing at all to do with this post.

But, FYI, Gibby is back as bench coach..............for the Mets, the team he played for.

So this is the first time I think I finally truly believe the Jays might be the front runners.

Ross Atkins isn't even in Nashville right now. He put out a statement/tweet that he had a "scheduling conflict" and he would have to participate on a zoom call.

That tell me 1 of 2 things:

1)The Ohtani camp wants to thank him in person but let him know he's decided elsewhere

2)We just landed this fucking guy

Been confirmed that Atkins was in Dunedin with Ohtani yesterday. My God, let's keep our fingers crossed!

Any idea who's replacing him?
I would imagine Ben is being replaced by Ben, as in Shulman, Dan's son.

It is subjective of course but I never liked Wagner, from day one. Yes he paid his dues in the minors but he didn't call a good game imho and I'm talking about the ones the Jays let him attend in-person (what a joke that is). Never did he paint me a picture like Jerry did.
I liked Mike Wilner when he was calling some of the games but they got rid of him too. I think Ben Shulman is much better at calling games and is a great replacement for Wagner, good move if you ask me.

I would love to see them sign Ohtani...only costs you cash. Just raise the beer prices

Soto, I'm not as bullish on. Wouldn't want to give up too much for a one year rental player as other's have said in this thread.

All this talk about Ohtani and Soto has at least gotten Philip @ TP back on the Blue Jays bandwagon, that's great news in itself. :D

I love Dan Shulman. To the point I don't that is anyone is the business better and extremely thankful he is pretty much our every game broadcaster.

His son sucks I think it's a shame if he is the one to replace Wagner.

Radio broadcasts are dead the writing was on the wall when wilber was sent packing.
I don't think what's happening in Toronto is necessarily indicative of what's happening in general in the industry.

Toronto, last year, was the only team that did not send their radio broadcasters on the road with the team.

As per Wagner, my problem was that there was no flow to his commentary. It felt like a series of disjointed statements. Very staccato like.

Just to add to that point I also think John Gibbons is more intelligent than people give him credit for. He’s a fun guy and he has that a whole backyard barbeque, Texas warmth to him, but he’s also very aggressive when the game is on the line. Dalton Pompey stealing second and third in the ALCS. Or bringing in Osuna with a four run lead. Etc etc etc all while maintaining the respect, connection and trust with his players. Watches the game and plays it by ear. Doesn’t spend too much time looking at the scouting reports and making irrational, early inning decisions like a fucking outerspace dweeb…..lol. (Pardon my French)

Jeez I miss Gibby.

A month ago I really didn’t see the benefit of this signing. Shack got me realizing it would be a good move. Now I keep refreshing my YouTube homepage to see if there’s any new developments lol. Apparently Steve Phillips favours the Blue Jays, whatever that counts for….

Apparently the Yankees are about to finalize acquiring Juan Soto.

When The Mightiest of all Broadcasters says you are the best player since Babe Ruth, how can Ohtani resist Toronto. Never mind Ross Atkins let Sid negotiate the terms.
