Because he didn't perform?
Lawrie was also apparently not a likeable teammate. And had limited defensive versatility.
Once he longer had potential to at least be an average+ starter, teams were not going to create bench roles for him given the above.

In the end he was a bad advert for Red Bull...

He had an OPS of .651 last year. But what really makes Atkins drool is that he's arbitration eligible through 2026 and not a free agent until 2027. Club control.

I definitely would never trade Bichette until Vladimir Guerrero proves himself on the fact that 2021 wasn’t just a fluke.

OMG, the management and fine tweaking involved to make sure Vladimir Guerrero is good. Protection in front of him, protection after him, and then maybe he’ll be seeing pitches to hit.

So who is the Jays best prospect to give them seeing how they already traded a generational catcher for defensive outfielder with an okay bat.

BTW, it's way to early to declare Moreno a generational catcher. He's played one season and has a lot of potential.
It was still too much to trade for Varsho. Mo prospect ranked that high has been traded and it's not like Varsho is an elite player.

After 1 season, it looks like Atkins got hosed.

It still doesn't make Moreno a generational talent.

You can't evaluate a trade like this for years to come. Right now it looks bad, but Moreno still has to prove himself for years to come, and Varsho still has a chance to become a better player.

Don't forger, Moreno wasn't going to get any playing time so they kind of had to trade him.
