Oh my mistake I thought it was from Alonzo.....So you got major leaguers smoking liners probably at 110 mph to a bunch of kids...Gee what could go wrong. Bet you changes are made now. Wonder if there is a liability issue here as well.

You know I really like Vlady and so do his fellow major leaguers. Not big on the hair though but that's just me showing my age most likely. Anyways back to the question. I've seen this derby apparently screw up a lot of players in the second half of their season. Happened to Judge when he was in it and he talked about how he strained a shoulder I believe. It's just too much violent torque in too short of a period of time. If I was a GM I would dissuade any of my players from participating. On a side note the one thing notices in these all-star games is just how many top flight Latino players dominate the League now. I believe that only 5% of the players are black now. There's an essay in there somewhere.

What are your thoughts on the contest? Did you see that kid get nailed in the head from a Pete Alonso line drive?

The way I see it, Vladdy's swing was already fucked up going into the derby, hopefully this will have the opposite effect and correct it.

I would love to see Jansen in the derby, dead pull power hitter, with a good At bats per home run this year.

So why do so many fans (not analysts) hold him in such low regard?

The way I see it, Vladdy's swing was already fucked up going into the derby, hopefully this will have the opposite effect and correct it.

I wonder. Is his swing fucked up or is he poor at anticipating what pitchers are going to throw and/or at reading pitches that are on their way? Many swings look horrible because he's being badly fooled and making bad choices. It might not necessarily be the mechanics of his swing.

Yeah what a great idea, lets put little kids out there catching Vladdy line drives that have a 115MPH exit velocity.

I have a gut feeling this will help Vlady. He seems like the type of person that thrives on this type of attention. If he was having any doubts about his hitting this may boost his confidence. I'm curious to check on how it affected his Father after his win. I missed the kid doing his impersonation of Jose Canseco.

Baseball is definitely entrenched in the culture in Hispanic countries. Black culture has shifted it's emphasis to basketball and football.

Your comments about Vlady's hair reminds me of Grandpa Simpson.

Just a follow up to my last post: Vlad Sr. won the HR derby in 2007 and ended the season with 27 HR's. The next year he hit 27 again in fewer AB. 2009 was a write off because he appeared in much fewer games. 2010 he had 29 HR's. Keep in mind he was 32 years old when he won the derby, so age was becoming a factor.

There are lots of reasons for black athletes focusing on Basketball and Football. First the costs of playing high-level baseball has sky-rocketed in some cases fees can go upwards of $30,000 for a season. Fees for the other two are much lower. Also the wait for the big money is alot longer in baseball then it is in Football and Basketball. Baseball you need years in the minors before making big money, Basketball and Football a few years at college before the big money (3 years for Football and just 1 in Basketball). Also for the two big college sport NIL money can go as high has 1mil for a top athlete in college.

Because the fans remember a blown save, not the 10 saves he had prior to the one he recently blew...

And what do fans know anyways? Last year many were calling for Bo to be traded right up until he caught fire in September and he's stayed on fire this year. Bo has had the most hits in the AL in each of the last two years and is on pace to lead the league again this season. Heck I was one of the fans calling to Bo to be traded last year.

And can you believe fans calling for Vladdy to be traded. Yes, his power is down and yes he hits into way too many double plays (lead the league), but I'd call that an issue with where Schneider has him positioned in the lineup vs. him failing to deliver. He's hitting .329 with RISP, so put him in a order place where he's more likely to have a runner in scoring position vs. a runner on first base.

Not most likely, definitely. My thought on his hair was that he if he can hit home runs to win the derby with his hair tied back then maybe he should have it tied back for every game.

For the first month of the season Vladdy had more walks than strikeouts. He was being way more selective in the pitches he swung at, but then in May he changed his approach and started swinging at way more bad pitches. Especially pitches down and away (his kryptonite), which is where pitchers pitch him because the scouting reports all show that's where you'll get him to swing at garbage pitches.

Not sure why the change in approach. Did someone tell him he's a player who needs to swing to get homers, or no one pays a player for walking more than homering? But his approach changed. Now he's still having an okay season, just not a franchise player season.

I thought he was working kind of slow starting around the 4th/5th inning. And he was fighting his stuff at times. But overall it was nice to see a strong outing with much better control over his pitch arsenal. Hope the progression continues because without him firing we stand no chance in the post season.

I was watching him between innings and coming back to the dugout and stuff like that…. he had a happy energy joking with the umpires and the team. Not sure if they showed that on TV.

Because Toronto is a Mark Lemongello type of town. We expect perfection from players in other sports yet give blind loyalty to a certain hockey club. Jordan Romano is great, Vlady is great yet we nitpick at them. Meanwhile the Leafs have told their actual fans to fuck off, they are not wanted at the arena.

The Leafs should relocate to Chattanooga.

You are bang on. We never know what goes on behind closed doors. Only what they allow us to see and hear.

It's the same with trades and contract negotiations. What is being offered and what is being demanded or requested. We also don't know what goes in the locker room between players. Two more days without a Blue Jays game is a long time.
