Gustafsson is worse than Holl, when it comes to being nervous watching them play in the defensive zone.
Don't compare Gustafsson with Holl. They are different players. Compare Gustafsson to Sandin. Washington used him as their top PP D. Holl is Leafs top PK guy so that alone should keep him in the lineup. If Leafs use Gustafsson in the playoffs it would be the same way they would have used Sandin. Probably more insurance than anything else. Perhaps if Rielly gets injured. Sandin was off the top 6 already once they got McCabe.

They should re sign dubas, he will be signed within a week if they fire him. He wants to be a lifetime gm like Yankees Cashman. Never seems to happen too much in hockey, Doug Wilson maybe until he stepped down and st Louis guy been there a while I believe.

Shanny and dubas have brought stability to the organization.

Wasn't it Ballard who first called Swedish players "chicken Swedes?"
Hmmm. Now you've got me thinking. I know Cherry didn't like European players in general.

I do remember that Ballard said that Inge Hammerstrom could go into a corner with a dozen eggs and none of them would get broken.

By the time Cherry established himself as a pre-MAGA (Cro-MAGA Man) jerk in the 80s ,more and more Swedes of differing stripes--hello, Thomas Sandstrom, for example--were populating rosters. It was in the 70s, when hammer-strung Hammerstrom played that Ballard let loose on the Swedes. I'm still pissed at Cherry for that too-many-men penalty late in the third with a one-goal lead in Game 7 of the '79 semis vs. the Habs. I had just gotten back to my apartment from MSG where I had watched my Rangers--the Ooo-La-La Rangers--upset the Islamders in 6, and I was convinced we would have beaten Boston in final. Cherry blew it for us. Idiot.

1979 was the last of the great Montreal teams.

"After the series, forwards Jacques Lemaire and Yvan Cournoyer plus goaltender Ken Dryden retired from the NHL. The trio left the game with a combined total of 24 Cup victories among them. Head coach Scotty Bowman, who had amassed his fifth Cup title in seven seasons behind the Canadiens bench, also made his farewell appearance with the team."

I have never heard it from that perspective before.

As a kid I hated Montreal and was pissed that the Bruins lost.

The Leafs lost to the Oilers 5:2 tonite.
All those trades didn’t do them any good. They need to beef up Defense and goalie, since their highly paid forward players are not score.

New players in the lineup, only game 1, need time to gel, also players like Kerfoot and Holl are nervous about getting traded. After the deadline, once the lines are set, the Leafs will be ready.

Cherry will say he wasn't against Europeans coming over, he was just pro-Canadian, he didn't like Canadians losing NHL jobs.
