That was the old Willy. The biggest knock on him was his lack of honest effort on a consistent level. That has changed this season. Anyone can see he’s been a lot more committed and consistent.
I checked his career stats, McDavid reached 800 career pts at the age of 26, I believe Wayne Gretzky (23) and Mario Lemieux (24) are the only 2 to reach 800 pts younger than 26.

TB traded 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th round picks and Cal Foote for one player Tanner Jeannot who has a whopping 213 hits this season. 4th highest in the league. More than Hattaway, more than Acciari.
They are both signed for next season as well so they are not rentals.
With Muzzin out Leafs definitely needed to get a defenseman. This should move Sandin off the top 6.
Schenn could also help with his size and hitting. Perhaps he can replace Holl.
All 3 pairings should be more balanced now.
McCabe is a +7 on a terrible Chicago team which must count for something.
He has 122 hits which is more than Holl with 115 blocked shots same as Gio and he kills penalties.
Lafferty was Chicago's 3rd line center behind Toews and Domi.
He kills penalties and has 4 short handed goals which leads the league.
He also has 94 hits. Leafs are loading up on rugged centers who can kill penalties.
Perhaps they are planning to get Marner off of penalty killing and use him more at even strength.

Maple Leafs acquire Jake McCabe, Sam Lafferty from Blackhawks
The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired defenceman Jake McCabe, forward Sam Lafferty, a conditional fifth-round pick in 2024, and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2025 from the Chicago Blackhawks, the team announced Monday.
One of them is signed for 2 more years.
There's is talk of a Leafs/Canucks trade. I'd take Schenn for Holl anytime. From Frank Seravalli:

He mentions Kerfoot or Engvall or Holl.
Why not both. Especially if you think all it takes is a 4th rounder.
One is RHD and the other is LHD. They could make a pair to replace Sandin Holl.

That's right, McCabe's contract ends 2025. Same as Marner and Tavares.
He's in effect the Muzzin replacement.
So, according to Frank, Kerfoot trade would be a salary dump with Leafs requiring to add a pick or an asset for Vancouver to take him.

There's something about Schenn that Dubas doesn't like and some about Holl that Dubas likes.
