Yea the Wikipedia version was my understanding. Good 'ol team mates. In Mendoza's case, his glove kept him in the lineup. In Gallo's case, it's the long ball. So the Gallo line is for guys who stay in lineup despite hitting below .200 because they hit a lot of home runs. All you need now is an MLB player to help make it popular. The Zimmer line is for pinch runners and defensive replacements lol.I believe it was George Brett who coined the phrase "Mendoza line".
According to wikipedia, the phrase was first used informally by Tom Paciorek and Bruce Bochte, but made popular by Brett in an interview with Chris Berman.
