I believe it was George Brett who coined the phrase "Mendoza line".

According to wikipedia, the phrase was first used informally by Tom Paciorek and Bruce Bochte, but made popular by Brett in an interview with Chris Berman.

Joey Gallo finished the regular season with a .199 career batting average, in 2,364 at-bats.
Yea the Wikipedia version was my understanding. Good 'ol team mates. In Mendoza's case, his glove kept him in the lineup. In Gallo's case, it's the long ball. So the Gallo line is for guys who stay in lineup despite hitting below .200 because they hit a lot of home runs. All you need now is an MLB player to help make it popular. The Zimmer line is for pinch runners and defensive replacements lol.

Does anyone remember Dave Kingman, he was an impressive specimen. He either hit a home run or struck out.

Fake outrage at Coors Field...it must be much easier to get drunk in the rarefied air of Denver than at Rogers Center. Supposedly a drunken Rockies fan yelled the N word at their mascot. The Rockies released a breathy statement about providing a family friendly environment for their fans while banning the unruly fan for life. It was later revealed that the fan was yelling Dinger, the mascot's name, instead of the N word. Jim Norton, being the sweet ray of sunshine that he is, suggested they change the name of the mascot from Dinger to Thin Air Cunt.

TBH, I feel sorry for the guy. He had such a horrible year, it must be tough to not only face your teammates but to feel that you are part of the team. Not only did he go 0-4 in one of the games with 4 strikeouts, he amateurishly bobbled the ball in the outfield not once, but twice on the same play allowing the runner to take another base.

Who is going to give this guy another contract?

Brad Zimmer is Ichiro in disguise. At least the Jays don't have to face him, I still remember him juking the catcher to score a run for the Yankees.

Former Jay Mark De Rosa weighs in. He wasn't in Toronto for long becoming Munenori' Kawasaki's unofficial translator during that time.

The Houston Astros of course………….. and their rookie ball affiliate of the Florida Complex league. Lol. I don’t know how he was drafted in the first round. He’s just one of those guys who doesn’t know how to adjust to mlb pitching and the scouting report on him. Sad when you see such a big prospect not able to conquer that final step.

I recall some of them being mammoth home runs.
Hey Tommy Lasorda, what do you think of Dave Kingman?

Jared Kelenic belongs in the 'biggest busts' thread; .168 career batting average in 500 at-bats, .141 in 163 this year. Marginally above one strikeout every three at-bats, career. He was a top ten Major League prospect when he moved from the Mets in the Edwin Diaz-Robinson Cano trade, and he's starting for the Mariners. Maybe he has a photograph of the team owner in bed with a goat. Next stop...the Japanese league, or possibly the Italian, if he does any worse.

Any calls on which teams are going to win the 4 WC series?

Maybe Jared Kalenec knows that the team owner took part in Cheech and Chong's South Seas Epic, Buggery on the High Seas. Mark De Rosa retired as a Jay, imho Kawasaki was annoying without him as his straight man.

The Jays have to be focused in Game 1, they face Robbie Ray on Saturday. Considering what an erratic year Jose Berrios had, shouldn't they have tried harder to sign Ray?

Mark De Rosa is now an analyst on the MLB Channel.

Hope Jays don't wear those bad luck/gawd awful looking red jerseys today.
I'm not a fan either. They wear red on Canada Day and mostly when Berrios is starting, so unlikely today. I don't like the powder blue either. The dark blue is my fave, followed by white and grey.

Kikuchi is working on a 6 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings streak, but he's on the playoffs roster only because he throws left-handed and he's familiar with most of the Mariners' lineup. The rosters can be changed after each round. I think we've seen the last of Mitch White as a Jay.

Considering that Berrios had always been more consistent than Ray throughout their careers it is no surprise that the Jays did what they did. Last year's Ray and this year's Berrios were both very different from what they'd previously done. Pretty much, outliers.

I also don't recall many people, in general or on TERB, criticizing the move (choosing Berrios after Ray) at the time. Hindsight is a totally different situation.
