Something similar happened to me.

A homeless man at McDonalds asked me to buy him some food. I agreed, and ordered a Big Mac meal for him. He then demanded an extra Big Mac. That was more than I was prepared to give him, so I said, "Sorry, that's too much." He got angry, and said, "It isn't too much!". I immediately canceled his order, and he created a scene. I underestand homeless people have mental issues, but I have no desire to help people like that.

I'm glad the man took his $5 bill back from the ungrateful bum.

This fucking piece of shit mocks a girl for giving him a dollar bill. No wonder fuckers like this are homeless. They are ungrateful and entitled. I would gladly help mentally ill and handicapped, elderly and sick, but not lazy assholes like this.

Most homeless adults are addicts or people with serious mental health issues.

Normal people are able to find accommodation rather than live on the street. Canada has many safety nets for people seeking employment or housing, even if they choose never to work.

The only think you got right here is mental health issues the rest is crap the reality is we don't have enough accommodation for the homeless, shelters are dangerous low income housing is scarce. How is a person with mental health problems supposed to get a job? a lot of them don't even have any ID. And as far as normal (as you call it) goes, at one time most of them were normal.

Why do these people feel the need to film themselves helping the homeless?

If you want to do a good deed, do it. No need to film yourself doing it so you can post it online.
Well if you don't film it and put it on line it never happened and doesn't count.

Much like Hadrian's Wall, Picts or it didn't happen as they say.

Not disagreeing, but any chance to haul out some humour SPQR style.

We need more social workers working in the community. People with mental health issues can’t get ID. Why? Because they can’t leave the house because of anxiety, they have no transportation, they get overwhelmed with paper work, they don’t have money. All these things we find easy, they final difficult. We need more community social workers to aid them in this. Aid them in getting to the doctors to keep up with medication, to take them to appointments for their mental health, to help with administrative stuff, to help speak on behalf of them to organizations etc that are meant to help, etc

I agree. However, there are two issues. One, a person who does not wish to help themselves will not be helped no matter how much assistance they receive. You can't cure mental illness with external factors alone. Some of it has to come from within.
Two, where's the money coming from to support such programs? Social workers aren't cheap, and the needs of the mentally ill are time-intensive. If we weren't running deficits every year, I'd say we could expand such assistance, but since we've been running in the red since 2008, I can't suggest that.

Most of the permanently homeless population has severe mental illness.

IMO, these people posting these videos are exploiting that fact.
Agreed. But these particular homeless are still ungrateful pieces of shit. Wouldn't give them a dime.

Well said .. Hit in on the nail ..

One quick story .. Recently stoped @ a Pizza Joint .. Noticed a 'homeless' person sitting by the window .. Offered to buy him a slice of Pizza and he went off @ me .. Apologized if I misread the situation cuz he was getting a bit too vocal for my liking .. Either way .. Didn't put too much thought into the matter .. Tried to help and he refused so I just left it @ that.

So weird. If someone mistook me for needing assistance, my first reaction would be embarrassment, not anger.

The one and only time I gave money to a homeless person (I grew up in an area that simply didn't have any) was in my early 20s when visiting Toronto. Guy asked if I could spare $5. I had $5 and change in my pocket, so the timing was unique, and I decided why not. So I gave him the $5. He then said "actually, do you think you could spare some more?" When I said that's all I have, he said "Really, come on man, you've got more, I know you do. You know what, prove you don't have more." Which really pissed me off. I told him I don't have to prove anything to him, he's the one asking for help. I could have $200 in my pocket and he's not entitled to a cent of it. At which point he called me a greedy motherfucker. That was my only experience ever giving money to a homeless person, and I resolved never to do so again. I don't mind donating to organizations that help the homeless, but directly giving them money is off the docket.

Most of the time when I get asked in passing I merely respond with a "sorry, no" and it's left at that. Sometimes there is grumbling, but usually that's as far as it goes.

But I do recall walking down a sidestreet downtown Toronto and hearing a girl get accosted by a guy in a wheelchair begging for money, wheeling along after her closely and going on about his story of crippled legs and not being able to find work or eat. She politely declined, and the guy went off on a rant about how he's treated like shit because he's disabled and that she's part of the problem, yada yada. The guy even poked at her with the cane he had; I mean it legit looked like he was trying to hit her with it, but she stayed out of reach. Girl ran off all red-faced. Disabled guy sniggered and called her "what a cunt", before moving on to his next victim, which was a lady parked in her van. He rapped on her passenger side window and she rolled it down. He started the same spiel, and wouldn't she please be an angel and help him out. I could see the sympathy in her eyes, so I spoke up and said this guy doesn't deserve any of your pity, or hard-earned money. Boy, did that piss him off! The string of curses and threats he leveled at me were quite something. I carried on my way without breaking stride, van lady drove off, and the guy was left there in both our wakes.

Some aren't homeless and just dress the part.
Many years ago at a gas station some guy comes out of nowhere and approaches me with a gas canister and gives me some spiel.
Several weeks later same thing happens this time as he approaches he recognizes me and make an abrupt turn.

It is not uncommon for me to see people on street corners asking for money. I carry change with me in the car which is kept in one of two coffee cup holders. Whenever I go past one of these people wanting some of my money, I make sure never to give them a cent. If you do, you are encouraging them to stay and keep asking other people. What I do instead is to move a coin from one coffee cup holder to the other.

After a while, when I get around to it, I will be driving by a local supermarket. There is an old fellow there that is obviously disabled both physically and mentally. He works for the supermarket collecting the carts. It doesn't matter if it is very hot or very cold or raining, he is working there, slowly shuffling along at a very slow pace to collect the carts. He has been doing this for years.

He has never asked for money, but I give the money that would have gone to the others(most of whom are physically fit) to him. He is an example of someone who is a huge positive to society and is my hero.

I suggest you do the same. Give the money to those that make society better. Everyone is capable, many that are capable, don't. Don't reward them. Find someone to be the one that gets the money others are asking for while they collect your money from the government at the same time.

It was obvious when the "shaky lady" would climb into her Mercedes after her "shift" of panhandling.
I gave 10 bucks to the infamous shaky lady once. I looked at it as an investment as her hand drawn sign said she’d pray for me !

One day I saw this man asking for spare change at our local subway station so I gave him a loonie. The next day he was back and the day after that and the day after that and so on. Then he was joined by another man so now there are two of them.

I've seen some people hang around to get the quarter or loonie from the carts.
