In our hot stove league we always talked about "strength down the middle", goalie, defense and forwards.
Left defence and right defence. How do they build defense down the middle? Do they not want defencemen who can go into the corners and play hard along the boards because they are too far from the centre of the ice?

Actually, that's a baseball concept and makes more sense. Catcher, 2nd, SS and CF.

In hockey, it is centre and goalie only.

He is actually a Montreal boy (I think Verdun). Spent years toiling for the then hapless Rangers before joining the Habs. I think it was his years with the Habs that got him into the HOF.
My dad watched him when he played for the Rangers, he lost a lot but he was spectacular, he got bombarded with shots.
In Montreal he got his just rewards.

He was a bit before my time but I heard he faced all those shots without a mask.

"But Worsley is often remembered as the last goalie to play without a mask in the NHL."
P.S. Andy Brown was the last goalie to play in a game maskless but Gump holds the record for playing most games (854) maskless.

Going back to the 1950's, Montreal has rarely been without an HOF goalie. Wonder who will follow Carey Price?

What. Are you telling us that goalies used to play without a mask? That is a shocking revelation. Who knew? (Uh. Everybody?)

"But Worsley is often improperly remembered as the last goalie to play without a mask in the NHL."

Sorry dartsy, but that is wrong. Gump wore a mask for the last 6 games of the '73-'74 season with the Minnesota North Stars.

Stan Fischler wrote this following article in Nov. 2020, 10 months after your article and it's on the NHL website:

Legendary hockey reporter Stan Fischler, known as "The Hockey Maven," shares his humor and insight with readers each Wednesday. Once a month, he lets a photo from his vast collection do the talking in his "Picture Is Worth 100 Words" feature.
The subject today is Andy Brown, the last NHL goalie to play without a mask.

Andy Brown's nickname was "Fearless." It was well-earned.
Brown turned pro in 1965 and for the next dozen years guarded his crease without wearing a mask. From 1971-72 through 1973-74, he had two stints each with the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
His barefaced courage overshadowed his statistics. He played 62 NHL games, going 22-26 with nine ties and a 3.79 goals-against average. He also set the NHL single-season penalty minutes record for goalies with 60 in 1973-74, a total that's still seventh in League history.
Brown's final NHL game, the last in League history to feature a barefaced goalie, came when he and the Penguins lost 6-3 to the Atlanta Flames on April 7, 1974. After that, he played three seasons (all without a mask) for Indianapolis of the World Hockey Association before retiring for good.
Perhaps appropriately for a guy nicknamed "Fearless," Brown followed his hockey career by becoming a race car driver before and then a horse breeder.

Yes, for the trivial obsessive, Gump wore a mask for the final 6 games of his (860 game) HOF career. It's right there below the title of the article I linked.

Again for the trivial obsessive, Gump was the last HOF goalie to play without a mask Except for 6 games.

Andy Brown's last NHL season was 1973-74. His last NHL game was on April 7, 1974.
Gump's last NHL season was also 1973-74. His last NHL game was on April 2, 1974.

Through a process of elimination, it would appear Gump is the goalie who played the most NHL games (854) maskless.

Apparently, it is not mandatory for NHL goalies to wear a mask (unlike player helmets). So, does this mean a goalie is not required to wear a mask but must wear a helmet?

Gump! How did you stop all those shots!
Because you told me to coach.
Gump! You are a god damn genius, I'd suggest you be kicked upstairs if it didn't mean the loss of an outstanding player.
Yes coach.

Jesus Price is just too damn inconsistent.

Yes, for the trivial obsessive,
I'll let you in on something. That's why they call it trivia. And the kicker is that you are the one who attempted to introduce the trivia in a failed attempt to show us how knowledgeable you think you are. Epic fail. You missed the dart board completely.

Which is another way of saying that Gump was not the last goalie to play without a mask. Andy Brown was. Gump was the 2nd last.

Your post was clearly incorrect, but it it seems impossible for you to utter the words, "I was wrong." What kind of personality flaw do you have that does not allow you to ever admit an error even when anyone who reads this knows that you are wrong but you can't say so. I'm not a psychologist.

Moving the goalposts again. Hahaha.

You'd rather embarrass yourself than admit that you were wrong.

Dealing with you is as easy as shooting fish in a barrel.

Not to get buried in minutiae, Gump is remembered as the last goalie to not wear a mask just like Plante is remembered as the first goalie to wear a mask.

Not at all. This is the very first time that I'd ever heard about Gump being the last. Never, ever. It was ALWAYS Brown. And Jacques (who is my #1 all-time goalie) was not the first to wear a mask. But he's the one who made it acceptable because he was so great.

Forget minutiae, you should concentrate on accuracy.
