"If you look at recent extensions done with defenseman who are similar to McAvoy in age and skill -- such as Cale Makar, Miro Heiskanen, Zach Werenski, etc. -- a contract seven to eight years in length with a salary cap hit around $9 million would be fair for both sides."

Morgan Rielly is a bit older than the aforementioned D-men. Wonder how much he is seeking?

I wonder what Bobby Orr could get if he'd played in current times.

He is easily duped — during his career — and then by Donald Trump. So I am guessing somewhere around league minimum.

In all honesty take 20% of cap with maybe a few million discount. So around 13-14 million. Even McDavid took a solid discount from 20%

Unless it’s Dubas. He would give him the max and also give him the term that would make him an UFA as early as possible.

I think most Leaf fans know that Rielly is gone after this season. He outplayed a value contract for six or so seasons and he should sign for some big bucks somewhere else. I mean, he could give the hometown discount, but considering how short playing careers are, he needs to maximize his compensation. I will be sad to see him go.

He'll be 28 when the 2021 season ends and when the 2022 season starts. He owes the Leaf nothing. Hope he gets all he deserves. This could be his last big contract.

"Morgan Frederick Rielly /ˈraɪli/ (born March 9, 1994) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman and alternate captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted by the Maple Leafs in the first round, fifth overall, of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Before being drafted, Rielly played with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League."

Even though Rielly hasn't fully lived up to expectation, if he leaves it will leave a massive hole.
He seems like a guy who is huge in the dressing room also.

His contract started to seem like less of a great deal and I don`t think he was underpaid.
A lot depends on this season but I can`t see him deserving a huge raise.
I would guess $6 - 7 million or so for 4 or 5 years.
At least, that is the most I would want him to stick around for. It is quite possible that he could get much more.

That is Torey Krug money and Krug is two years older.

"On October 9, 2020, the opening day of free agency, Krug left the Bruins after nine seasons and signed a seven-year, $45.5 million contract with the St. Louis Blues"

There were several times the past couple of seasons when I thought Reilly was overpaid.
Another team will give him much more than I would be comfortable giving him.
Dubas doesn`t have the cap space to overpay another player at this level.

Hey, if Doug Hamilton is getting $9M/season on average, Rielly is getting more than $7M. He has flaws in his game, but he is a dynamic puck mover, a solid defender, and someone who can put up a lot of points on the board.

Anyways, the fact is that unless he decides to give a massive discount to the Leafs for his next deal, he is gone by July 13th. I can't see the Leafs trading him at the deadline...

I agree. What is ironic is that what Rielly gets will be influenced by what McAvoy gets.

"if Doug Hamilton is getting $9M/season on average," Holy crap, Hamilton's cap hit is $9mm. Who's his agent?

So, McAvoy signs for $9.5mm per.

If Rielly leaves and he very well might, then that is a piece of the "core" gone. Who's next? IMO, I think the Leafs have to make a blockbuster trade to move up to the next level.

"Many speculated that Matthews wanted a shorter deal so he could become an Unrestricted Free Agent sooner and leave Toronto."

I think Matthews' decision will be based on whether the Leafs have a shot at the cup.
Unfortunately, I think the team is trending down. Outside of the top four, they're a bunch of nobodies.
In three years, Tavares will be in a sharper decline
They're paper thin on D, the tandem goalie routine is a money saver, they can't afford to pay a premier goalie + decent back up.
Again, I hope I'm wrong but that's just what I see.

I would not consider Morgan Rielly a solid defender. He is a very good skater and can move the puck. However, he hasn't done so at the level he did when he put up 20 goals and 70 points back in 2018-2019.

Well, we now know Rielly did not get McAvoy or Hamilton money.
