I think most Leaf fans know that Rielly is gone after this season. He outplayed a value contract for six or so seasons and he should sign for some big bucks somewhere else. He'll be 28 when the 2021 season ends and when the 2022 season starts. He owes the Leaf nothing. Hope he gets all he deserves. This could be his last big contract.

Even though Rielly hasn't fully lived up to expectation, if he leaves it will leave a massive hole.

A lot depends on this season but I can`t see him deserving a huge raise.
I would guess $6 - 7 million or so for 4 or 5 years.
At least, that is the most I would want him to stick around for. It is quite possible that he could get much more.

There were several times the past couple of seasons when I thought Reilly was overpaid.
Another team will give him much more than I would be comfortable giving him.
Dubas doesn`t have the cap space to overpay another player at this level.

Anyways, the fact is that unless he decides to give a massive discount to the Leafs for his next deal, he is gone by July 13th. I can't see the Leafs trading him at the deadline...

I think Matthews' decision will be based on whether the Leafs have a shot at the cup.
Unfortunately, I think the team is trending down. Outside of the top four, they're a bunch of nobodies.
In three years, Tavares will be in a sharper decline
They're paper thin on D, the tandem goalie routine is a money saver, they can't afford to pay a premier goalie + decent back up.
Again, I hope I'm wrong but that's just what I see.

I would not consider Morgan Rielly a solid defender. He is a very good skater and can move the puck. However, he hasn't done so at the level he did when he put up 20 goals and 70 points back in 2018-2019.
