If they could get just one, solid, talented 8th or 9th inning kind of guy... not even a high profile closer... then together with Romano, they could work it... like Henken and Ward... learned to do many years ago... H & W were the heart of the Blue Jays pitching engine... and what the BJ's need now... is what they had then... starters who could keep them in the game into the 6th [they seem to have that now... though you can never have... too much pitching]... 3 or 4 quality relievers that could hold a lead into the 8th... then Ward to set it up... and Henke to close...

Presto! A way of finding... a way of winning... many of those 19 losses the Bullpen has lost...

That's all they need!

So I am predicting a major trade... for that back end guy... which is what they had in Yates...

The Blue Jays got Duane Ward from the Atlanta Braves for Mr. Warmth: Doyle Alexander in 1986. He improved every year as Tom Henke's apprentice. In 1993 he was given the keys to the Mustang as closer. His bread and butter pitch, the low hanging curveball won him the 1993 Fall Classic. Lumber companies filed a complaint against him due to all the splintered bats that pitch left in it's wake. However he retired in 1995 due to the stress that pitch put on his arm.

He should be getting more air time as a Jays broadcaster. The change of format after Jerry Howerth retired has stymied his career.

They are great but I'm not sure yet if they are WAMCO, especially when they were 1, 2, 3 in batting for the AL.

Well, no trade needed but they got Borucki back off the IL.

Agreed, Julian Merryweather has hurt his back , in rehabbing form an oblique injury, who knows how much longe he will be on the IL. He was a legitimate lights out closer.
If Jays want to make a serious run for a playoff spot they will have to trade for a good pitcher.

I am waiting until I see what happens when Springer starts hitting... maybe even Kirk catching... before making that assessment... which is not taking anything away from WAMCO... ;)

I love Ward. Quite possibly one of my favorite Blue Jays ever. But we got to admit, Gaston burned the hell out of him. But his arm mechanics were so unorthodox, he was bound to strain the hell out of that thing eventually.Ward, another guy that was clocked as the ball crossed the plate. In 2021, high 90s for sure. Probably touching 100 sometimes. Such a heavy ball, imagine the spin rate metrics on that shit.

If you check the stats page on the BJ site, the rotation isn't bad and Ryu and Ray and Manoah are fucking awesome. Look at the bullpen stats and it's hard not to hang your head and cry though.

At this point, Jays are 3 back of the 2nd wild card.

Magic number is 78 with 72 to go.

Looking forward to the 3 game series against Boston starting tomorrow. Winning 2 out of 3 would be nice.

The better that they do in the next week to 10 days, gives management more motivation to make a move like that.

Fun semi irrelevant fact: I was born the day they won the series in '92. My aunt(mothers sister), also pregnant, was supposed to be induced the same day, but her doctor was at the Game and she flat out refused to be taken care of by anybody else LOL.

Stripling managed to get one out tonight! Way to go! 6-0 Sox in the first inning. I really don’t care for his demeanour when he pitches, doesn’t seem to be bothered by being shelled.
