Gausman's stats last year were comparable to RR's.

They were. I heard some crazy stat on 590 today. Something along the lines of, ever since he's gone back to being a starter, he has thrown his split-finger 40% of the time. Or something crazy like that. He's got so much control over that. Mid to upper 90s fastball too.

I heard that the Mets are looking at Buck Showalter and Max Scherzer is pushing for him.

Isn't the Gausman signing an admission that the Jays thought they couldn't sign Ray and they then scrambled to get the best front end starter they could and then wrote Ray off?
Ray was, according to reports holding out for more. Due to the lockout coming Jays chose to look elsewhere. Then Ray realized he had to sign quick or be without a contract. It was a misread of the market by Ray.

Does not compute for me...

Blue Jays paid Gausman $110 million for 5 years... and allowed the Cy Young winner to go to the Mariners for 5 years and $115 million?

The Blue Jays are down one notch in the quality department... even though one notch up on the draft pick department...

I'd take known quality over prospect any time... especially now that they are no longer in rebuild mode... and seriously expect to compete...

There has to be more to this...

See above. Could be him, or his agent didn't read the market right due to the collective bargaining agreement.

Jays did what they had to do. It was as much about a time limit as cash.

I also heard that the Jays preferred Gausman.

Who knows? All I know is that I don't think that there are many teams that can top Berios, Gausman, Ryu and Manoah as their top 4.

Depth of the rotation and the pen are still very important.

Rumor is that Kris Byrant will end up on the Jays. Doesn't make sense to me. The price tag is to high, and the Jays have more pressing needs. Santiago Espinal is very productive for with great defense for the price at 3rd. Bullpen help, another certified starter and 2nd is what the Jays need. Not to mention Jordan Groshans might crack the line up and some point next year.

Two guys I'd like to see the Jays acquire, both currently Oakland A's: Pitcher Sean Manaea and Outfielder Ramón Laureano.

Manaea can be a free agent after the 2022 season. Laureano is arbitration eligible for the first time in 2022, but he's currently serving an 80 game PED suspension for nandrolone. That might prompt the A's to part with him for less than his market value. I don't know if that would make him persona non grata in the Jay's organization, but it's not as if he physically assaulted a woman; that's a one way ticket out of Hogtown.

Laureano had core surgery for a sports hernia in October, but is expected to be healthy by the time spring training would normally start. He has speed and power when healthy, and a cannon for an arm. I have no idea how long he was using PEDs, or if his arm strength might be diminished significantly without them.

Oakland's outfield depth is week at the moment, but a package including Grichuk and some prospects might be enough to acquire these two.

I can't see them going after Manaea.

How can you have Manaea and Manoah playing on the same team?
