If I set the Before/After at 2030 (start of season), would you bet the Before or After?
After. This will be debated and argued and many idle threats will be tossed by Rogers. They will want government money (tax breaks, grants, etc) to which I hope all levels say no fucking way.

If I was a betting man, I'd say they will eventually decide to completely gut the skydome and do a full renovation.

Interesting news indeed, not surprised though. Like BBL said - awful stadium for everything, saw a lot of concerts there and always wondered why the sound was awful. Nothing beats Maple Leaf Gardens, maybe because it was a different time and the fact that I saw my first concert there, Thunder Seven Tour by Triump - amazing venue, amazing sound and amazing smells.... :ROFLMAO:
Stadiums and arenas are built for sporting events not concerts. As a result sound quality will never be as good as concert halls built with proper acoustics.

This is true, I'm more invested in the new Massey Hall than a baseball stadium. Then maybe they'll tear down the piece of crap on Simcoe and King.

Hopefully NMH will sound as good good as The Royal Conservatory of Music's Koerner Hall.

Even Yuja Wang showed up there and danmand's favorite Tuba Skinny.

I've never been to the Skydome for a sporting event or concert, baseball and concerts just don't interest me. I have been there once when the autoshow used it for a few years.
But why was it the greatest thing since sliced bread when completed and now it's a white elephant? I remember players, teams and TV announcers raving about it.

Well, it was so much better, like a million times better than what it replaced, Exhibition Stadium...and it had a retractable roof, I believe the first one to do so.

About time. Rogers Centre is embarrassing. It regular ranks among the worst in media and player surveys.

It was - until Camden Yards opened in 1992. I've been there enough times to know that it's looking older than it's age. Repairs from ice damage to the roof have to be made every spring and maintenance costs have gotten more expensive over time.

Apparently, Roger's thinking is that the smaller stadium will be easier to fill. Of course a competitive team can do that, too- as the old enough among us remember when the Jays used to sell out and did so regularly.
FFS, they just have to have a decent playoff team and Rogers would sell out every f-ing game. Try and buy a ticket there in 92 or 93, you may as well try and buy a ticket to Mars!

The GTA is the biggest market in the majors demographically, given that Chicago, NYC and LA all split between 2 teams.

This is just a cover story to make money sellling that land for condos.

This isn't about just selling out a stadium. It's the money they make from the rest of development.

Hit the nail on head right here. The moment I saw Camden Yards, I hated the Skydome. It was horrible timing. It was built right before the realization that fans loved the old classic ball parks with a bit of modern twist to them.

As you said, Rogers Centre needs a new roof which cost about 200 million buck alone. This is why 100% a new stadium is coming. The money they're going to make off other parts of redevelopment plus plus throwing money in stadium that outdated and ranked one of worst just makes no sense.

That was close to 30 years ago...Rogers Centre has a baseball capacity 50,000, they could survive just fine at 40,000, and create a better atmosphere.

As long as the taxpayers are not financing this, I don't have a problem with this at all. As for the attendance; the Toronto baseball fans support competitive TEAMS. As long as Rogers can put a good team on the field, it doesn't matter how big the new stadium they'll build. They can build Midas' palace or the Field of Dreams, but no decent ball, no asses in the seats.

Prepare yourself for disappointment...I'm sure some taxpayer money will go into it.

Not true at all. The idea is with 81 home games and no guarantee to you can put a winning product on the field, you need other things to draw people to a stadium. The fact it's a new stadium will have people showing up in droves for the first 4 years no matter how bad the team is, but they're turning into a whole entertainment complex so people will hang out there.
