Leafs trade their 2nd round pick to Ottawa for 2 picks. Late 2nd and early 3rd.
Leafs made similar manoeuvre back in 2015 with Dubas acting as interim GM they traded down with their 24th pick to Philadelphia (Travis Konecny) for later picks of Dermott, Bracco and Dzierkals. Aho was picked right after Dermott. Hope this time it’ll work out better.

Well, yours didn't deserve a response but I'll provide you one anyway. There's a salary cap. By definition any team spending to the cap is giving out "fat" contracts. If you're referring to Leafs failing in allocation of funds given the cap that's a different discussion. Spezza was brought up which included his salary. In the same breath inferring everyone is coming to Leafs for fat contracts. Which clearly is incorrect. Spezza prime example of someone who came to Leafs and didn't get a fat contract ... not once but twice.

I've already given my view. It's unfortunate Leafs signed Tavares rather than a comparable top player RHD but Tavares was available at the time and a top RHD was not. They would have probably kept Kadri if that was the case. Tavares likely scewed the salary demands of Matthews, Nylander, and Marner. I see them as a much better team with a top RHD rather than Tavares and Kadri playing 2nd line with Marner. More balanced and a top D offers a lot more to the team. Imagine how the team would look if rather than Tavares Leafs had instead someone like Drew Doughty.
Leafs got a straight up offer - Doughty for Marner - Leafs said NO.
Tavares - really - ELITE PLAYER - takes a pounding in front of the net to score the way he does - tough to knock off the puck - a LEADER (which the Leafs needed desperately). And a home town boy at that.
While I 100% agree the Leafs need a younger Webber or Burns - no Tavares really?

Leafs sign Wayne Simmonds for 1 year $1.5M. Let Darts know he's better than Maroon.

I like Wayne - great grab - put him out with Marner - watch Mariners assists go through the roof and watch Wayne get more goals than he has ever gotten. Still need another hard playing D to compliment Muzzen.

No denying Tavares is the player you profess him to be but my point is Doughty would add more value than Tavares. Plus, they would have kept Kadri. Why the trade Doughty for Marner doesn't make sense is age. Doughty is 30 and Marner has yet to hit his prime.
Simmonds is a good signing. He's the new Clifford without giving up a 2nd round draft pick to LA.

Ageed - 100% why Leafs rejected it.

A number of years ago, the Maple Leafs 1st Round pick: comes down to
Player A 6'2" 230
or
Player B 6'0' 198

Farkin' Leafs, take the smaller player

Oh, their NHL Statistics, so far...
Player A
294Ga 44Go 67A 111Pt. 350 PIM
Player B
307Ga 86Go 135A 221Pt 74 PIM

Drafted 2 spots apart.
Who do you want on your club?
Jake (6’ 1”) Vs William (6’) virtually same size height 6 vs 6 1” - Jake approx. 35 lbs heavier (out of shape).
But 1” we are really not talking a 5’9” vs a 6’ 4” player - huge difference. Six , six one is pretty average. Most importantly one is an out of shape party guy and the other not so much - draft placement in any sport is just no guarantee. Look at
Alexandre Daigle - one of many. Look at NFL - Tom Brady one of few.

Not the 2 players I was referencing.
But you did have the correct draft, well done.
Toronto did not have the option to draft Virtanen, thankfully Vancouver had taken him 1 spot ahead of Leafs slot.

It's a 2" difference in size, not 1".

Player A is Nick Ritchie

Player B is William Nylander

What’s Alex Pietrangelo 5 USD / year - wonder what he will get in the lottery. Too bad we are out of that race.
Hope they keep Dermott - great hockey IQ.

The Rocker thinks Amirov is playing on the Leafs next year.
If Leafs had drafted a defenseman with their 1st round pick he'd be playing wing on the 3rd line according to Rocker.
Speaking of Amirov, did you know that Montreal acquired Steve Shutt via the draft.

This should make Rocker happy since he's small.
Dubas said in a virtual press conference, he doesn't measure toughness in size, he measures it in the way players fight for the puck along the boards (like Hyman), the willingness to come back after bad shift, the willingness to block shots. Take Freddy The Goat, he's 6'5" and he can't hit anyone.
