The Leafs have no 1st round draft choice and no cap room to sign any free agents.
Well, would you look at that?!?
The Toronto Maple Leafs have a 1st Round draft pick and $3,200,000 more in cap space than they did 12 hours ago.

If they can trade Marner and his 16 goals, the Leafs get an additional $11mm in cap space. Maybe, they can sign Hyman, Andersen and Rielly after all.

You plan on trading his 51 assists too, Rocky?

The trading of Kapanen seems to make trading Nylander less likely, unless Pietrangelo is on Dubas‘s list and that may require shredding more to create enough cap space. I’ll probably have to suspend this Nylander Trade Watch to the end of next season when the Leafs bow out again after first round.

"after the first round", assuming they even make the playoffs.

$10.893M for 1.135 p.p.g.a.
"93 pts over 82 games with no physical dimension = $10.893M?
Let me know if you're hiring, I'll work for you at those rates."

Hey Mellow, be careful out there. Marner is a huge favorite of George and his two sidekicks.

I' like Marner too, not at that money though.

Marner is a premier playmaker entering his prime years. He is one player I would not want to see go anywhere even with his salary where it is. Dare I say, I would place him close to Adam Oates in playmaking ability and Oates is in the HOF, not because of his goal scoring or the number of times his name is in the Stanley Cup, but due to his ability to set up quality goal scorers.

Marner has better numbers than Oates in their respective first 4 seasons in the NHL. In fact, Oates only started in the league when he was 23 years old. Only 23 years of age now, I really think Marner will have better career numbers than Oates. Yes, goal scoring is important but don’t underestimate Marner’s playmaking intelligence and imagination. Plus, he can play at even strength, power play and penalty situations. Also love the fact he is a GTA boy.

Don't tell that to Dart. His 12 year old mind stuck in a 75 year old body would not be able to comprehend. Him and his imaginary friends in real life thinks Marner is a goal scorer like Brett Hull. He wouldn't be able to spell Oates if he had it for breakfast.

Anyone who deletes the Leafs 2019/2019 thread and then has to gall to start up the Leafs 2020/2021 thread tells you all you need to know.

With Nylander as part of this core, they’ve shown that they can do very well in the regular season where the majority of games are played with less than 100 % intensity. It’s in the playoffs when the team you face pushes intensity and physicality to another level, the Leafs just stay at the same level and have no push back.

If Dubas insists on keeping this quartet as a core, I would hope to see at least a shift in the supporting cast from small and (supposedly) skilled guys to guys who have more size, grit, and willingness to win one-on-one battles. They need to change their image of being a soft team so the other players wouldn’t feel so comfortable playing against.

Once again, you put your vast knowledge of hockey on display for all to see.

The 3 BFFs are posting their usual useless posts.

Back to hockey, I don't expect Marner to score over 80 goals like Brett Hull but the guy was paid $15mm last season and scored 16 goals.

Marner has better numbers than Oates in their respective first 4 seasons in the NHL.
It's difficult to compare players from different eras and different positions. Oates was a centre and they are expected to be playmakers. Wingers are expected and paid to score goals, unless they have other attributes.

Here are the goals and points in their first 4 years:
Marner 83 goals, Oates 68 goals
Marner 291 points, Oates 281 points

Let's play general manager and say you can pick 2 players from the following list for your team. In addition to goals and points, you must also consider leadership skills, character, toughness, defensive skills, etc. Who would be your two picks?
Oates
Bergeron
Gainey
Charbonneau
Ryan O'Reilly
Marner
