China has had live animal markets for thousands of years, was there never SARs or Cornavirus before?
Sanitation and hygiene practices have certainly changed. So you'd likely die from something else before a SARS like virus would get you.

People have become too "clean" to withstand theses viruses. Global travel makes it infinitely worse.

the flu vaccine is effective 40%-60%. so if they come out with the covid-19 vaccine, there is still a chance of infection. i'm as confused as you are

Weird.

"It may end up being a bad flu season for kids, but early signs suggest the vaccine is working OK."

Thats the first sentence of this article. https://time.com/5788119/child-flu-vaccine-2020/

My family got the flu vaccine this year and my wife and kid got the flu. Many children at my kids school came down with the flu and the parents I spoke to also said they all got the shot.

I guess that means it works A-O.K????

Is it scientific enough to say it works "OK"? Very conflicting info.

Racism is not due to the virus. The racism is always there bubbling beneath the surface. The virus creates an opening for it to be seen in full light. It helps people to justify voicing their hate.

It is the same rationale for the increase in racism in the U.S. The only difference is that the virus is does not create the opening. It is trump.
On point. It's an opening. It's a like a deep-rooted seed that needs light. Virus, Trump, police, etc, are the light that enables people to act out their hate and anti-discriminatory agenda alike

Just remember, it's not racism if the Left does it!!!

"Vaccines against many infectious diseases aren’t considered successful unless they are at least 90% effective. But flu is particularly challenging, partly because the virus can so quickly change. Overall, flu vaccine averages around 40%."

"U.S. health officials have counted 92 child flu deaths this year, up from the same time last year but fewer than were counted by this point in 2018. In all, the CDC estimates at least 14,000 Americans have died of the flu this season."

very weird indeed! no deaths yet in canada from covid-19, those who were infected, were treated and released. i'll drink corona to that

Does anyone know how or with what were they treated with?

If its treatable, why are soo many dying?

And please dont spit out numbers to me. The Chinese govt is killing off those who disobey them and spilling the beans on the real numbers or sentencing them to 7 years for not following protocol.

If it wasnt as big of a death rate or a serious as the seasonal flu we encounter, why would a country close down and impose a quarantine on itself?

We dont do it here.

I haven't read the whole thread but I will say that racism is alive and thriving because of this corona virus.

I have had several clients come to me and say " oh I hope your not seeing Chinese clients " & when I told them they were being racist the only comment they could make was " well it came from china "

Needless to say it definetly makes sessions less enjoyable.

Our immunity system doesn't get enough exercise now. Get rid of the Lysol. I grew up in rural Quebec and we use to play with and feed the animals -- pas probleme. Get rid of the Lysol.

Actually both of those stats mean a lot, in china the difference between the number of males to females is not as great as you would think 713 MLN men and 681 MLN women, it's less than 5% difference, where the numbers of men vs women who were affected by the corona virus represents a 16% difference, which means men are at a more significant risk.
Or that men are less likely to wash their hands or more likely to go to for groceries to get food for their families during pandemic. To many possible reasons for this difference

This is not racism, this is racial profiling. Huge difference: the former is irrational hate, the latter is rational optimal behaviour. Racism is bad, racial profiling is unfair for some people by no fault of their own but it is rational.

Yet you have a "no black clients" policy in your ads.

Hey she said less enjoyable, not that she cancels the session! Morality ends where the paycheck begins, I surmise.

I think what happens with this virus is that a significant percentage, like 15% (a guess) need ICU treatment, which is fine when you have 15 cases, and not so fine when you have 15000.

you can't complain about racism when you openly discriminate against black clients

Then why do healthy people get vaccinated?

There is this constant flip flop on flu's and the need to vaccinate.

If you dont vaccinate, you are an outcast. If you do vaccinate, you're a savior. The flu kills many people a year.....Yea, but because they had a weak immune system. Blah blah blah...

So, what is it? Vaccinate no matter what or only if you have a weak immune system?

Remember, there are studies done and also member posting that more people die from the flu yearly than from the covid19 virus yet we have the magic vaccine here but our death rate is higher?

Can someone set the record straight on what to believe?
Reality is what to believe. You could even try this thing called looking at science.

For most people, the flu vaccine isn't to prevent death but rather to prevent getting sick. For some, they get vaccinated to they won't get the virus and pass it on to someone they care about with weakened immune system. There are also some people who can not get a vaccine either because of allergies or another medical condition. For those people, the only protection is herd immunity.

Vaccines are also not 100% effective as they do not produce the required immune response in everyone. A vaccine like MMR is somewhere around 95% effective at training the immune system. The flu has an additional problem as it is very mutagenic and they do their best to predict which strains will be prevalent in a particular flu season.

But I guess for some, basic science is too hard to understand.

If Russia had the outbreak and posted their stats regarding the virus, would the people in tv land believe Russia's numbers?

I find it interesting that WE take the Communist country experts numbers as accurate and any other numbers produced as conspiracy.
Unless someone provides a more verified set of numbers, what do you suggest? Should we just become fear mongers and seal ourselves in our homes?

Not weird at all. Hundreds of thousands (if not millions) in Canada have been exposed to the flu virus this year. Maybe a few dozen have even been exposed to covid.

Your question is sort of like wondering why dozens of pedestrians get hit by cars every week in Toronto but not in Iqaluit.

no, my initial question was "the flu vaccine is effective 40%-60%. so if they come out with the covid-19 vaccine, there is still a chance of infection." -- but it was more of a rhetorical question

The flu vaccine is different from most other vaccines. Vaccines do range in effectiveness but most are generally 90%+ effective. The flu vaccine is very effective IF the flu that happens to be going around is the one you’re vaccinated against. The problem is that there are many flu strains and doctors don’t always know which ones will be prevalent during any given flu season. Thus, the flu vaccine that is given is based on an educated guess on which strains you’re most likely to get. Doctors don’t always get it right, though, and the prevalent strain could be different from the one in the vaccine that was prepared for that season, thus making it ineffective. Something like, say, the MMR vaccine target specific viruses with little guesswork involved, so it’s much more effective.

So it’s less that vaccines aren’t that effective and more that it’s not always easy to know which vaccines people should be given.
