20 pandemics from over a period of close to 2000 years. The notion that "so many" come from Asia and Africa in particular is ahistorical.

i like this. interestingly enough. if you count the number of deaths by country, europe and north america has much higher death rates than asia in relation to origin of virus. does that mean europe and the americas ate more fruits

Most are conflating "racism" with the normal, understandable will to keep yourself away from people who may have recently traveled to China (this relative to the OP date of February 16 ).

The most likely places one might encounter people who have recently traveled to China are at a Chinese restaurant or in a Chinese neighborhood. People were merely playing the percentages and the media excitedly decided they could call that "racism".

Same might be true today of anyone who traveled from New York to Quebec City regardless of the color of their skin. Avoiding them (in March of 2020) just because you knew they were from New York is not in itself racism.

It's self-preservation. (even if based on gut feelings and not specific awareness of who has been where)

According to official reports, the vast majority of deaths from this virus were people over 80 and/or people with existing health problems.

The severe reaction from China, as I’ve explained before, is due to the embarrassment the Chinese government suffered over their handling of the SARS outbreak. Saving face is extremely important in Chinese culture, far more so than anyone not familiar with their culture would be able to understand. The government is more than willing to let thousands die and millions suffer in quarantined cities if it means they don’t look bad on the international stage for not doing enough to contain the virus, I can assure you of that.
