For the two years of highly entertaining ball, the Tulo and Martin contracts were worth it.

For 2019 they should hire Martin as the manager at 20 million under the condition he retires as an active player and they do not owe him the 20 million as a player. They free up a roster space and they have a lower player based payroll. BTW I am being sarcastic here...

I didn't say that I expected it to happen. I said "if they were serious". And by serious, I mean serious about giving the fans a proper team to cheer for, instead of letting shapeero weaken the former playoff team each successive year.

Yes, Rogers is a business and is beholden to their shareholders. I wonder how happy the shareholders are when attendance has gone from:

2016--3.4M
2017--3.2M
2018--2.3M

As I'd previously estimated, losing a million asses in the seats (along with concessions, souvenirs, apparel, advertising revenue [decreased viewership]) they probably lost north of $100M by not keeping the team competitive and going on the cheap. If they are a responsible business driven by the bottom line spending $30-40M to get a more competitive roster would more than pay for itself. It does not seem like a difficult process. And they'd build, or at least maintain good will with the fan base who could see that the team takes the fans seriously. That pays off down the road as well. It matters not if AA traded prospects (who, for the most part, have really not done very much). Rogers is filthy rich. For them, spending money should be easier than an individual.

Throw some money at the problem. It is totally illogical and bad business sense to do what they have done.
And if it back fires? Now you have a shit team and even more handcuffed by bad salaries. At some point, you need to rebuild as even the mighty Yankees did.

I 100% agree. At some point you put all the chips on the table and go for it. AA did that, and because of it interest in this club has sky rocketed like we haven't seen in year. Even with the last few years being shit, the effects of 2015 and 2016 are still prominent. Kids baseball registration has sky rocketed in the last 4 years.

First off, the interest generated by making some bolder moves will help advance sales and season tickets prior to opening day and help the bottom line instead of letting $100M fall by the wayside. I am pretty sure that those 2 were down significantly this year. The retention of revenue would help mitigate the cost of the new contracts.

I am also not talking about signing megastars for $25-30M per year for 10 years. But pick up a few quality players at $15M/year for 2-4 years. Those guys cannot make the same long term demands that the big stars get away with, especially with the new approach by league owners. A lot of guys had to wait a long time to get contracts this year. Get some mid-quality depth at those prices and then fill in more spots with cheapo retreads that shapeero is so fond of. That way they are not saddled with Tulo and Martin contracts. shapeero has almost exclusively gone cheapo.

I think Morales is about $12M/year. The only problem with his signing was that he was an inferior substitute for Edwin who was/is more productive and was also beloved in the city. Morales' paid a public perception price for the resentment that the fans had. But Morales has definitely put up some decent numbers. Get a few guys like him and the team would be a hell of a lot more competitive than they were this year.

BTW, if shapeero seriously thought that this roster would contend and keep fans coming, then he is a terrible judge of talent.

They tried to sign EE and he went elsewhere for less money. They also offered Dexter Fowler the best deal and he didn't want to come here.

Not saying you don't have an argument, but at the same time you don't have the actual stats, P.L reports, etc...

I'm just sayin....there's probably more to this than what we see.

What's the magic number?
Aalll season long I was going to do it, but my negative feelings about how the season was going to go and then the mediocre start, I figured, why even bother.

Gotta see if I can find that poll guessing how many wins.

There are rumblings that the Cubs may part ways with Joe Maddon. If that happens, the Jays should grab him immediately.

I'd be shocked if Maddon leaving Cubs. He's there till retirement, imho. Don't think he's interested going to a rebuidling team like the Jays. If he goes he's probably ended up in LA or SF.

When Shapiro et al hired Wedge, it was rumored he was "the manager in waiting". There are names on that list I know little or nothing about. Wedge would be my least favorite of the candidates named.
I was just about to say the same thing. The Jays have gotten worse each year with shapeero in his comfort zone hiring his "yes men" from his prior Cleveland days, where they also accomplished nothing. The name that I've heard that interests me the most would be Sandy Alomar Jr.
