Jays almost had a great trade prior to the start of the 1977 season.
Louisiana Lightning Ron Guidry (170 career wins) for Bill Singer was a deal negotiated by Pat Gillick; but, the deal was vetoed by rocket surgeon President Peter Bavasi who was pushed out the door soon enough.
Singer went on to get 2 career wins after the almost trade.
At that time Pat Gillick didn't have the power to swing such a trade, he was Director of Player Personnel. Bill Singer was long past his glory days with the LA Dodgers, he got a World Series ring but didn't get to pitch in either 65 or 66. He lost out to Claude Osteeen in the rotation.

Ironically a former Jays manager nearly became one in 1979, Peter wanted his father Buzzie (General manager of the California Angels) to fire Jim Fregosi so that he could fire Bobby Mattick and hire him. Bavasi was replaced by Labatt's career man Howard Starkman after the 81 season and Pat Gillick moved up to General Manager in 1984. From 81 to 83, Starkman ran the team with his protege Paul Beeston as General Manager. Starkman moved into a director's role in 83 and Beeston became President. The rest his history.

Getting Donaldson makes me think what the greatest trades have been in Toronto history.

The two that come to mind are getting Donaldson and getting Doug Gilmour. Are there any others that would rank up there?
My nomination for most lopsided trade is Jose Bautista for Robinzon Diaz. Diaz was a catching prospect, I think, who had all of 1 major league home run in his career (139 AB). We did pretty well on that one.

Who did we trade to get Edwin?

Donaldson now with an 11 run RBI lead over Chris Davis, 15 runs over Morales. Josh's competition have yet to break the 90 RBI plateau and he has hit 100!

The Jays acquired EE from the Reds for Scott Rolen. The third baseman was considered a marquee player, the Reds tossed in two pitchers as well to get him.

Forget about a new President, get AA signed to a contract extension. He's going to be in demand and chances are good they could lose him.

That's the thing. There are many trades like that we don't remember, or aren't as well known because the players weren't such big names at the time. The Brett Lawrie for Josh Donaldson trade is very polarized because both players were somewhat popular and already established, with both players still having lots of upside left. Turns out Donaldson had tons of upside....lol. One might say MVP upside...lol.

For example, before both players ever played a game in the NBA, the raptors traded antwone Jamison for vince carter, that was a steal too, but doesn't like it as much since neither one had played a game in the NBA.

Angels don't impress me at all....a bunch of Mexican guys in their bullpen, .
The Angels have one Mexican in their bullpen: Fernando Salas, 1 Venezuelan, 5 Americans.

Schedule:

We play Texas for 3;
Home stand - Tigg's; Tribe; O's;
Road trip - Bosox; Yanks; Braves;
Home stand - Bosox; Yanks; Rays
Road trip - O's

Only 4 more road series after this week.
6 more home series.
Plus .500 teams to play - Yanks x 2 series; O's x 2 series; Texas; Rays.
sub .500 teams - Tiggs; Tribe; bosox x 2; Braves

Atlanta stinks.

Our last 2 series are Rays and O's. Will they be eliminated at that point and be fielding prospects?

I doubt the O's will be eliminated.

Further data.

Scott Rolen won several Golden Gloves as a member of the St Louis Cardinals. He played in the 2004 World Series when the Red Soxs broke the curse.

Obviously he liked his time in Toronto. He showed up for Spring Training to train the Jays infielders.

Whether in or out of it, teams are always expected to field and try their best against contenders.

It is a matter of the game's integrity!

Just don't expect them to dive into the stands to make catches or run hard to first base on a ground out. Or play hard.

The one weak spot in our current batting order is the shortstop. He is almost an automatic out.

Apparently an excellent track record w the NL and it is a matter of time before he comes around.

I have no worries about Tulo, other than staying healthy. I expect you will be singing a different tune in a couple of weeks.

Dickey not fooling anyone, already down 5-1 and he's given up 5 hits and still not out of the first. We're going to need a lot of offence to win today.

Don't crap on Tulozzo, he'll figure it out. Gibby could do him a big favour by moving him to the 5th spot. He'll be more comfortable protecting EE and he'll drive in more runs. Protecting your team mates is important, The Real Donald wouldn't have such gaudy numbers if Joey Boom Bats wasn't the next batter.

BadKat is right, Revere is now hitting if Tulozzo picks it up we'll become The Legion of Annihilation.

Yipee, IT'S PARROT TIME.
