Yankees losing, orioles losing...Gibbons is a genius
Two nice bullpen meltdowns, both the O's and the Yanks. Wilson bled 3 runs in the 9th. And O' Day had a major meltdown in the 8th when the Twins were almost dead and gave up 3 as well. His ERA jumped about half a run! :p

People whine about so many things about the Jays.

Shockingly, it appears we are not the only team that may have some deficiencies.

Toronto does have a slumping, with regards to his spitting & scratching, field manager.
His tummy work has been less than adequate this entire road trip.

FYRE Da GOBBINNS !!

The TV guys said that age is catching up to A-Rod and he may be having a poor August, September and October.

Question: How much money will it cost to keep this Jays team together for 2016?

Nice breakout with the bats tonight.

Seriously, Pillar sucks. But I think the pitching staff would revolt if he wasn't in centerfield everyday.

And how many Latino pitchers do the Angels have? This game alone we've seen Santiago, Salas, Alvarez & Ramos. And they all stink.

Impossible to say (but, let's try!).

The only 2 big ticket items on the roster for '16 are Tulowitzki & Martin ($35M).

The club holds options on E.E., J.B., R.A.D., Izturis, Romero.

Say they decline the options on Izturis, Romero (guaranteed), that's $1.6M.
Presume the Blue Jays pick up the other three options, that's $14M (J.B.), $10M (E.E.), $12M (R.A.D.).

That's $72.6M with 5 players accounted for.

A few players will be in line for raises (some significant) in arbitration, i.e. Donaldson, to a lesser extent Cecil, Smoak, Hutchison, Revere among them.

Lets say the Arbitration Eligible players account for ~$20.4M in salary, the club would be at $93M with 12-13 players signed.

There's a few not yet Arb. Elig. players, that will likely make the club in '16, Travis, Sanchez, Osuna, Pillar among them.

Presume the club signs 5 of those Non-Arb guys to start '16 with the big club. We'll say that totals $4M

They're at ~$97M with ~19 players signed.

6 players (including some key free agents) remain to be signed.

David Price, oh, lets say $28M
Mark Buehrle re-ups for $14M ...and flights home to see his pitbull whenever he wants
LaTroy Hawkins signs up $2.5M
Marco Estrada says sure $8.5M
Someone to back up RM $2.5M
Some backup utility guy $1.8M

Using my wild stabs at salary/option/arbitration decisions, heh, not so bad, right around $154M to put the band back together.

Opening Day payroll for 2015 was $125,915,800

Joe Torre was secretly a mobster. He fixed the whole league and threatened to whack other managers if they didnt throw their games.

You know its true. Eh, fughedabout it
If you know what's good for you you'll keep your mouth shut.

Aye, forgedboutit.

If Costanza's numbers are right then Rogers needs to add 25 million to the payroll. I'm not sure if he'll go for that

Price alone adds that in extra attendance every season.

If thats true then Mr. Rogers has no excuse for not signing Price to a long-term deal (other than that 7-year sticking point).

Say he adds 10,000 fans per start. Say an average of $60 per seat. $600,000 per start. 16-17 starts at home equals about $10M. Still not bad.
Plus we get a % of AWAY gate receipts. So when Price starts in the Bronx in September, we benefit from the increase in NYC fans who attend at Yankee Stadium.

We only get 70% of the gate at home. Away team gets the rest.

Don't forget the concessions. The gear. And the increased advertising payout from ratings. They have been exceeding leafs games in viewership.

The $28MM question is can we get greater value somewhere else? Stroman is coming back. David Price only pitches every 5 days. He will be 36 years old when the contract matures. Who else is available in the free or restricted agent market for 2016?

Apparently the 9th inning battle between Miller and Tulo broke several records for TV viewership last weekend.

That's a big 'if'.

I think I may have guessed low with regard to what Mr. Price will get offered.
After a night's sleep, and upon further reflection......
Probably between $31M-$34M A.A.V. is a more likely (I wanted to type reasonable, but....didn't seem appropriate) number.
So, add another $4M to the payroll estimate, making it around $158M.

That's not too hard to figured out.

The Jays are a legitimate contender, the Leafs suck giant tube steak. And will continue to do so till 2018.

The likelihood of Mark Buehrle not returning is high.
He speaks regularly about missing his family, the man has done everything there is to do in professional baseball.
Subtract $14M from my payroll estimate there, making Price's price-tag more palatable to the bean counters.
Slot Stroman into Buehrle's spot in the rotation.

Suddenly, even with paying David Price ~$32M next season, the Blue Jays payroll only goes up ~$20M to ~$144M.

In 2017, I don't see Toronto resigning Encarnacion, he will be an old 34 at that point, and moving toward solely D.H. duties.
That's a big salary off the books, as wil be Dickey's, who will not be in Toronto in '17.
Bautista, I can see finishing his career here, but does his salary increase?
