The Jays gave Jeff Hoffman and Miguel Castro to the Rockies, in return they also get reliever LaTroy Hawkins.

This is a strategic move, they get rid of Reyes contract and his scatterbrained fielding in return for a solid all-star. Hopefully this means they'll have more money to go after Jeff Semardzija in the off-season. He already owns land in Northern Ontario and he could replace the departing Buherle.

? I read the new short stop makes 20 + and his contract expires in 2020 ... I wonder if they are going to flip him now ... Don't understand the trade ?

Shame about Castro.

Re Reyes, I don't think there's ever been another player that I have loved and hated so much, sometimes in the same game - make that the same friggin' inning sometimes!

Useless fielder. Brilliant offensive player.

Yeah, I don't think we're ahead, money wise. The sports reporter on CBC made the point that Tulo is better than Reyes defensively, and that will help the pitching by itself. I'm thinking that Tulo may need a few games to get accustomed to the Toronto turf, but he should definitely help.

Tulowitzki is owed $113.7 million through 2020, according to MLB.com, and would receive a $2 million bonus for being traded.

His contract also would convert to include a full no-trade clause from here on out, per Fox Sports

That's a pretty bold and daring statement, isn't it?

Did anyone see this coming?

Typical AA trade. Surprise! Surprise!

Like the trade of Reyes would like to have kept Hoffman but you have to give up something.
Will it be enough or is there more to come?

Injury prone?

Though Tulowitzki’s injury history may be worrisome, he and Reyes have similar woes.

Over the past three seasons, Reyes has played in 305 games. Tulowitzki has played in 304.

Tulowitzki is signed through the 2020 season. Reyes has two years remaining on his contract after this season.

The more I read about this trade the more I am more confused ? Two pitching prospects ?

I think the Jays should flip Tulo for pitching help. First of all I don't think he's happy about coming to the Jays, from what I've read he wanted to stay in the NL and he apparently had the Giants, Dodgers and Mets at the top of his list if he were to be dealt. Another issue is how his legs and hip will react to playing much more on turf. Remember Tulo has missed a lot of games the last several years due to leg and hip surgeries. He's one of my favourite players so I was shocked to hear about the deal but if the Jays are going to keep him going forward I hope he can stay healthy as he will continue to put up solid offensive numbers.

Do you think the reason it wasn't expected is cause Jays needs pitching and nobody was expecting the Jays GM to trade two pitching prospects to upgrade our short stop situation ... The reason it was unexpected is cause it wasn't necessary ..

Necessary maybe not, but they got a younger player that makes less money. Reyes was killing the Jays with his defensive miscues. Personally, I think it is an upgrade. The downside is how much of the future has been given away? and one could argue will our new guy stay healthy long enough to make a difference.

This trade IMO is not enough to win the East, but it may get the Jays a wild card berth.

I discussed this w Gibby and AA earlier this morning. Apparently Colabello would be the new shortstop...

Here
I argued for a Reyes trade and putting Travis at lead off earlier on this thread... yet, I think in 3 or 4 years we will regret letting go of Castro. But that's baseball!

No doubt Tulo is a huge addition... and I suspect that Hawkins, while not a high leverage addition, may be just enough to meaningfully bolster the pen.

Maybe there is another trade in the works? Maybe Sanchez is heading back to the rotation?

Because this trade, alone, does not sufficiently improve the chances for this year.
